I would guess the police model world have a different program in ECU to disable speed limiter etc, bigger alternator, and stronger suspension.

The only reference to a "Police Pkg" I've seen in FSM is the "Extended Idle Switch Test". Just seems like if there actually was a bunch of things that made up a "Police Pkg", they would be addressed in the FSM. Maybe I missed it.

Extended idle feature. I think part of which is built into the PCM programming.

10" brakes ... The brakes are 10" but if you look at the pads they are narrower than the 9" brakes. I think part of the design of the brakes is because of heat build up when stop and go driving, the brakes would less likely fade and have necessary friction and stopping power at high speeds.

I'm don't think extended idle is part of the programming......I believe there's a write-up here somewhere explaining how to wire it up.

I did see a reference to 10" drums in the brake section of the FSM but nothing saying 10" drums were "Police only". Maybe they were just an option that anyone could order/spec on any XJ. I have not seen any reference to a "Police Pkg" in the suspension section, or in the cooling section, or in the power-train section. I wouldn't consider the XJ as a "Police Interceptor" by any stretch of the imagination..........unless it was available with an optional "HEMI". But surely that would have been addressed in the FSM. Something tells me that a vinyl rear seat, rubber floor mats and the extended idle switch may have been the extent of a "Police Pkg". Maybe some has a build sheet that says "Police Pkg".

I have a 96 that was a state park police vehicle. No extended idle but did have factory front and rear skid plates and lots of holes in the roof from bubble gum machine. Also front and rear tow hooks.

Perhaps you're right. I don't know much about the police pkg. The FSM does provide information about the extended idle and in the wiring schematics. As an option only available with the police packages. However doesn't specify anything about 9 or 10 inch brakes, that functionally work the same.

There are all sort of Cherokee builds some for other countries e.g. Canadian builds because of Canadian laws include daytime driving lights. Some oversees builds used an exhaust resonator, others came standard with adjustable headlights, etc. Fleet builds for utility companies, PUDs, etc. sometime include LS rear differentials. Some of which may or may not be included in the FSM.

Some builds with standard features, the customer was able to delete certain features. My build sheet shows a few delete items that were standard for that model. e.g. Some years Cherokees are denoted as either a Sport or Classic model, however the customer could build a combination model as a "Sport Classic".

While shopping for brakes I noticed the 10" brakes being available.

10" shoes dimension - 10 x 1.75 inch vs 9" brake shoes - 9 x 2.5 inches.

Rear drums I have looked at, 10" include fins appear to be for cooling and/or additional strength vs 9" drums are usually smooth without fins.

I do remember something about the PCM p/ns being different for the Police package, that the dealership won't accept another type of PCM and program it as a police pkg PCM. (even though you have a Police pkg. Cherokee and VIN, the customer is suppose to have the OE pcm p/n that matches the vehicle and vin)

PCM part numbers 96 Cherokee.

5604 1199 4.0 Eng., Auto. Trans., RFI

Here's one link that discusses the Extended idle switch ..

Link to information about Police Packaged Cherokees.

After looking around in a 98 Jeep XJ - OE parts manual there are pages for rear brakes titled ...

Brakes,Rear,10 Inches X 1 3/4 Inches,[AHB]

Note:Sales Codes;
[AHB]=Police Group
[BGA]=Brakes,- Power Front Disc/Rear Drum
[BGK]=Brakes - 4-Wheel Antilock

97 Proportioning Valve 5212 8035 1 J, T 10‘ Rear Brakes (AHB Police Package)

Wiring Instrument Panel 1997 XJ - 56009 913AB 1 J, T w/Police Pkg., Left Hand Drive
5600 9705 1 J, T Dome Lamp w/Police Package

Wiring Body & Accessory 1998 XJ - 56009 705AC 1 J, T w/Police Package (LHD)

There are several other areas that are using AHB Police Group OE part numbers.

Transfer Case Select Trac
Axle Assembly,Rear,Dana Model 35 [DRJ,DRM]
Brake Lines and Hoses,Rear

May depend on the year XJ, earlier years through 1990 may have been customized vehicles, while later years builds used police groups or packages.
