Default Different Rotors or Not?

Looking to install new brakes on my 98 xj. Do I need to stick with the original type of rotor the flat kind or can I install the vented type. I like to install the slotted and drilled kind. I read or heard somewhere that I needed to stay with the original style if thats what it came with. ( Flat Kind)

I also used a drilled and slotted rotor they will clean off water dirt or mud so the brakes will work better .

Save your money, you won’t ever notice a difference. Brakes work by friction, so more surface area contact equals more friction equals faster stopping. Slotted/drilled rotors are designed for race application to dissipate the extreme heat and prevent brake fade. On street/off road cars they’re totally unnecessary.

I found that my brakes work better off road with the drilled and slotted rotors , because it gives the dirt / mud and water some where to so it dost not stay between the pads and rotors .

You know the danger driving in rain on water soaked roads is not with your brakes getting wet, its with the adhesion between the tires and road being broken by the water and oil. A lot of wrecks you see when someone sled off the road was because they used too much brake and broke the adhesion between the tires and road.

This is true, drilled and slotted rotors are a waste for 90% of the people that buy them.

You'll notice more improvement from better pads than better rotors. That said, I went with the upgraded drilled rotors on my KL because that was the only thing available last year, and they work better than the oem setup. Don't forget to properly bed them in after install as that makes a huge difference.

I'm running Power Stop drilled and slotted rotors with ceramic metalic pads front and rear, braking performance is 10 times better than stock

ceramic pads are amazing, much better than conventional and they produce way less dust so the wheels stay cleaner. I’d bet the biggest difference is the pads, the rotors just don’t add anything without extreme heat to overcome. Quality coated rotors and ceramic pads is probably the best bang for your buck, better than stock and helps things stay corrosion free.

I tried drilled and slotted rotors once. I would say braking was better than before them...or maybe the ceramic pads were better who knows. Mine was noisy as could here slight ticking while driving by wooded areas and the manufacture said that was normal as he had some on his Mustang and they did same thing. After about 5 years got looking at them as started having braking issues and notice around the holes and slots the metal was flaking off and really had about 70% of a machined surface left so replace them with some regular rotors and never looked back.

I would say maybe if you drive a lot in rain/mud maybe worth it if you can find a good name brand (mine weren't and maybe that was my issue) at a good price might be worth it but for average Joe in his normal drive to work and back no. This is just my opinion and what I learnt from my experience yours may differ.
