Question Differential Oil

Quick Question (and it may be a stupid one)

I have had my 95 xj for a couple of years now and just changed out my differential oil about 150 miles ago and now I have oil leaking out just behind my wheels so now i have to take everything apart again and replace the seals and might as well do the bearings and ball joints while im in there.

But my question is can I reuse the gear oil I will be taking out of my diffs? Or am i gonna have to refill them with new oil again? Like I said, Ive only driven maybe 150 miles with the new oil in there.

That is True. But, the front diff has royal purple 75w-90 (18.99 a quart) and i'd rather not toss that out if i dont have to. ha.

I've never reused oil of any kind. the use of royal purple oils is your own fault. what are your plans with all of that newfound power and fuel mileage since using the new oil?

Thing is cleaning outside so no contamination during draining.

Last I knew grease wears out, and grease able joints have seals just like non. ALL farm/heavy equipment with joints I have seen are grease able . Plus, they would allow expulsion of contamination.

JMHO, your results may, and will vary.
Oopps, wrong thread !!

If you're capturing the diff oil as you remove the cover with a pan that's very clean and not your typical waste oil container that you use for oil changes, I'd say it's ok. Normally, the pan I use for fluid draining will have all sorts of gunk in it. If you have a new/clean plastic or metal container to drain into, it should be fine since its just capturing the same oil you already have in the diff. I think some of the people were thinking you meant recycling the oil dripping out through the seals. You don't want that reused.

That's like reusing toilet paper, saving the first time used if not much on it

Differential fluid is cheap always use new, its a 4wd change often I change mine often when used off road or in areas of water/mud. At least every 3 mo. my covers have drain plugs on them and I pull the covers once a year to inspect the gears and lockers. I buy the fluid by the 5 gal. bucket at the tractor supply very cost effective.

He just changed the diff fluid 150 miles ago. Nothing should be wrong with it. It's synthetic fluid too.. Why waste money? As long as it's not contaminated during the draining process, it will be fine.
