That plug you think you're missing is likely just the vent. Top of the diff on the passenger side, comes out horizontally. There's normally a hose that runs up into the engine bay so it can breathe

Hmm, I did find a little rubber plug on the axle that may be for it, it is exactly the same size. I guess I will have to see what the Dana 30 on my XJ looks like.

Cleaned up my NP242 today, it took over an hour with degreaser and the pressure washer to get it looking good again. Also degreased the front driveshaft, it seemed to clean up nice as well. Still need to clean the tranny, but I am just glad to make some progress.
