Default Do I Need A Fan Shroud?

The plastic shroud for my mechanical cooling fan broke off. My Jeep isn't running hot at all without it and I know better than to stick my hand in the fan. If the Jeep is running fine, is there any other reason I need it?

Yes, you need it because without it the airflow through the shroud will not give you the extra boost to get you to 88 mph and activate your flux capactor to help you go back through time!!

lol j/k

The shroud just directs airflow and keeps your hands kinda safe. If the weather warms up and your rig starts to heat a little, then just put a new one in.

Come summer time you will need it, time to search your local 'pick and pull' or junk yards.

I was planning on running 3 electric fans. Would I need the shroud?

ON my 97, the shroud also keeps the radiator overflow hose from getting caught in the fan.

Yes!!! You absolutely need the fan shroud. It only cost about $25 to replace. Or, leave it off and see what happens in the summer.
Electric fans fail and when they do you are screwed!
I went through all this and reverted back to a good fan shroud, and mechanical fan. I also put in some hood vents because I never want to overheat again hours away from civilization.

x2. Duct tape is now keeping it from getting caught in the fan....at least until I get a new one to replace it.

LOL me either but if you find a j/y with radiator or fan parts they should have the shroud. Then give them a call.

I just had to remove the fan shroud on my '96 Cherokee Sport. My fan belt broke recently and I think it became damaged during the replacing of the belt. I kept hearing a "flapping" noise and looked under the hood to see that a piece had broken off and my fan was grating against another loose piece. Needless to say, I zip-tied my radiator overflow hose out of the way and I'm driving around "commando." Haha. I'm glad to know I can wait until spring before having to worry about replacing it.

You can buy one for about 15$ shipped at Rockauto. I recently broke mine while changing my radiator and replaced it.

I got a brand new fan shroud from rock auto for like 16 bucks.

My overflow hose is routed over my valve cover, and next to the injector rail down to the radiator. Now that I think about it - probably because there was never a fan shroud until now. I'll have to look at that.
