Sorry for the poor picture quality...

Swapping out an engine in my 97 Cherokee and this dropped out while we were lifting it and now that I have the replacement engine ready to be put in I'm not sure what this piece is or where it goes.

looks like a lifter, must have had work done before and fell out then.

 

I hope it fell out of you old engine and not the one you are putting in. This a lifter and it belong inside the engine.

Yes, it came out of the old engine somewhere/somehow. It was disassembled with the head removed. Is this absolutely for sure not needed in some way in putting the new engine in?
