I cannot seem to find a definitive way to tell if my '97 cherokee has the towing package or not.

Trying to determine if she'll pull ~3000lbs or ~5000lbs...

Whether it has the tow package or not doesn't determine whether it will tow 3K or 5K. Do you have an aux transmission cooler? Is your cooling system in tip top shape? Do you have an electric brake controller (Does the intended trailer have electric brakes? I hate hydraulic trailer brakes)? Even after you have all that, the XJ is only rated for 3K without a load leveling hitch. Lastly are you comfortable towing the load in such a light vehicle?

addendum: you may want to switch to a thicker oil in the rear diff, I don't remember the recommended thickness off hand.

Sorry I don't have the link but you can request your build sheet from Jeep by submitting your VIN. Doesn't take too long. Within a day.

You can get the build sheet on your jeep from the jeep customer service peeps. But you could look for a couple of things... I believe the factory tow package came with a transmission cooler, HD radiator and a hitch. So look for the hitch and the trans cooler. If it's not there then that's a big clue...

Also do you know what rear end you have? Post a pic if your not sure.

Thanks guys - build sheet requested.

I'm not looking to push it - just want to pull a pop up trailer that clocks in at around 3k (wet).

I am hoping it has the package so I'll be well under the capacity!

If you have a class III hitch and 7-pin trailer connector, you have everything that came with the tow package.

Don't forget a trans cooler too.

i had an 89 and a 90 both with tow package.
both had d35 non c-clip and 3.55 gears.
both had the 7 pin connector, factory chrysler hitch and trans cooler.

you can make yours a tow package with simply a trans cooler and wire harness for trailer lights. add your own hitch and you will be good to tow up to 5k pounds.

you could probably tow up to 7k pounds if you have trailer brakes.

I would have thought that it would have came with a 3.73 gear like my WJ tow package. Gonna put that in my file cabinet, just hope I remember it the next time I need it

Hey guys, thanks for all the info. I got my build sheet (below), and to my newbie eyes, it looks like there is no trans. cooler, and so that is what I'd need to improve the towing characteristics.

The truck does already have a receiver hitch and the connector.

I didn't know they made a non c-clip D35 ... how do you tell which way it is?

I have the hitch and connector. I assumed the only trans cooler is the one in the radiator but maybe I should look closer.

non c-clip d35 ended in 1990.

i don't know of any xj with 3.73 gearing coming stock. at least i haven't come across one yet.

possibly a 5spd xj as my 99 tj came with hitch and 3.73 with a 5spd.

Can someone for the benefit of the neophytes explain what a clip vs. non clip means?

Also, what does the following mean for the towing and other characteristics:

JHS Dana M30/181MM Front Axle
DMDP 3.55 Rear Axle Ratio
DRAS Corporate 8.25 Rear Axle

And finally, if the build does have a transmission cooler, does it just say "trans. cooler" on the sheet?

You guys rock
