Also, what does the following mean for the towing and other characteristics:

JHS Dana M30/181MM Front Axle
DMDP 3.55 Rear Axle Ratio
DRAS Corporate 8.25 Rear Axle

And finally, if the build does have a transmission cooler, does it just say "trans. cooler" on the sheet?

You guys rock

A c clip inside the differential housing holds the axles in place. If the axle breaks, the wheel will eventually fall off.

A non c clip has a plate behind the axle flange that holds the axle/bearing in the housing.

87-90 for sure, not too sure about 84-86. my guess would be yes, but don't quote me on that.

On a c-clip axle the axle shafts are held on with c-clips in the differential and the wheel bearings are on the axle tubes. On non c-clip axles the axle shafts have the bearings pressed onto them and are held in place by retainer plates at the end of the axle tube.

example of a c-clip axle:

example of a non c-clip axle (note the retainer plates):

You have a Dana 30 front axle (all 4X4 XJs do), a Chrysler 8.25" rear axle (the same axle used in Durangos, Dakotas, older Ram 150/1500s, Liberties, etc., 8.25" refers to the ring-gear diameter), this has equivalent strength to a Dana 44, but less aftermarket support. You have a 3.55:1 axle ratio (front and rear), virtually all 4.0L I6, automatic XJs are 3.55:1.

Okay - then I guess I won't ever have to do the stick and straps thing

Of course I've never broken an axle on anything yet ....

cool.
i have yet to snap a rear axle shaft yet too, but it can happen.

91 and up definitely c-clip.

also, an xj44 is a semi float, non c-clip. that's another reason they are so desirable.

My mistake the 3.73 gears came with the tow package, since the Limited slip came with the Upcountry package I assumed the gears did too. My 98 Classic had both packages.

Even then it was only specific years/combinations. There are a lot of XJ with the towing package that still have 3.55 gears.
