Holy *****. Are those hone marks? Is there no ridge, just a little carbon up there? You said it was knocking, still, gotta wonder if someone's been in there already. Now I'm curious, did some dummy just bake a rebuilt and warp the crap out of the head? 200K and hone marks? I'd check the back of an insert and see if it's stamped oversize. I'm a real cheapskate. If plastigauge checked out OK with some new rod inserts I might bolt a decent head on it and run it with the new rod bearings. I did re-ring one once that looked pretty good, but it was already out with the pan and head off.

Cylinders 3,4 and 4 got a nice cleaning from the coolant, oil, gas mix. As far as I know this block has never been rebuilt. I won't know if those are oversized pistons till I get them out. The block has the accumulated gunk of 200k on it. It had had the knock since I got it and I know that as soon as coolant as little as 4 ppm gets in the oil It will start to kill the rod bearings. If it is a rebuild than shame on the PO for doing it such harm but there is no way the exposed head bolts were far to hard to remove. the build up of grease and gunk was far too thick for this to have been rebuilt once already.

Just saw that, my sister lived in East Quincy, went to Feather River...I rode my Hodaka Ace100 from there to Crockett/(Bay area) once. (was 15!)
Anyway, oke-dokee....I saw the silicone on the pan and what looks like maybe hone marks, still don't know if there is any ring ridge.... , or if the bearings are oversize, already. I guess you will find out...

I took Dflintstone's advise and rather than Wrestle the 70lb hunk of cast iron up from my basement and into the block, I used a straight edge and the feeler gauge in the center of the head I could fit a .016....... So I am going to say yes it is warped. I didnt get much further because I ran out to meat someone for my "new" engine stand. $20 on Craigslist.
A word of advice, three wheeled stands are a little unstable, especially with the length of our motors. Be careful if you move that sucker with the motor on it. They're kinda "tippy".

You'll need to rebuild that as long as there's no cracks anywhere. Plan on spending about $2000. Have the cylinders bored/honed, block resurfaced as well as the head, line bore for main bearing, then buy a kit and put all new parts back in it. Use quality parts and fle-pro gaskests. Carefully check the flexplate and harmonic balancer for cracks too.

I continued tearing down the block today. That mess they call the accessory bracket was a pain ***. Just to be 100% sure the head was warped I threw it back on the block and was able to fit the .013 gauge in the gap. I also noticed my reman water pump impeller was very close to the cylinder 1 wall. And 2 bolts on the bell housing are MIA...... And I was not with our help. Now if I could train him to bring me the right wrench I would all set.

x2, we had that exact stand when we rebuilt my buddys 00. Lets just say that engine learned how to take a fall when we had to try to drag it over the grass to be put back in the jeep.

I finished up for the day. Pulled everything off the block now all that is left is to get what is rest hoisted out. I took another look at the clinkers and they do have some somewhat fresh looking hone marks but they are irregular and they don't look professionally done if they are fresh. I am ditching the head because it is the factory head and its pretty warped. I am hoping to pull the motor next weekend and start breaking it down to get it off for magnafluxing.
