Default DOH!!!! I broke a bolt in the block!!!

Installing a new water pump today I broke one of the four mounting bolts around the impeller housing.

Of course it has to be the on the bottom left the one you cant see, and my drill doesnt fit.

Now what??

Extractor bits are made, but if your drill doesn't fit, you may be in for a real treat.

Start removing things til it does fit!

Unless you are good with a welder and can weld a nut to it to aid in the removal. But if its stuck in there good enough to snap the head off, welding may not be strong enough.

I guess Im going to have to go and pick up a 90* drill ... otherwise it looks like Ill have to take off the front clip..and that would suck.

Part of me wants to forget I did it...but I know that aluminum is going to warp and Ill have to start all over.

I wouldn't do a 90* for extracting a bolt... You'd have a heck of a time holding it steady.

I'm not too familiar with the earlier models, but the only things in the way (besides the grill) are the radiator and condensor, right? They aren't too difficult to pull out - you probably would only need to disconnect the radiator, I think the soft lines to the condensor will give enough to just let you pull it out of the way. Toughest part is the "quick connect" (LIES!!) fitting on the lower tranny cooler line (again, not savvy on your year - you might not even have one).

Once those two things are out of the way, you might be able to sneak an extension through the grill so that you don't have to take it off.

I ended up taking out the radiator, grill and A/C condenser to get to this bolt.

Now that I can finally see it I get a drill on it drill a nice pilot hole...stick in my ez-out and....wait for it.... SNAP!!!

So no I have an ez-out stuck in there and my problem now is I cant seem to drill through it even with a cobalt bit. I AM REALLY IRRITATED

Are you sure I need this....its only the water pump what could go wrong?

I hate easy outs just for that reason they are too hard to drill. Wish I had a solution for you. Good luck!

Sorry about your trouble that really sux. The ez-out while being very hard is also very brittle. You could try giving it a couple of whacks with a hammer and chisel or center punch and see if you can fracture it.

With the ez-out gone try this:
If your pilot hole is centered in the broken bolt simply step drill up to where the hole size is even with the threads. Tap some new threads and your done.

If you can't remove the ez-out:
Use an extraction or stainless rod to weld a nut on to whats left of the broken bolt.

I'm not sure if the coolant jacket is directly behind that threaded hole. If it, is you could, as a last ditch effort drive what remains of the bolt through then helicoil the hole for a larger bolt. You would have to enlarge the hole in the water pump as well to accomadate, and don't hold back on the thread sealer when you assemble it.

Not good news but I hope this helps.
