it's fine, thats exactly how the doors on our 89 looked when we got it. i took a metal rod and bent it into a U shape so that i could stick it in the part on the door and the part on the body and then opened the door... it pulled it out enough that i could put a pin in.

i didnt read it all but you can get some pliers and really pull on that sucker and it will come back out. If not all the way just enough to put the pin in the holes and open the door and problem solve. I have done this a couple of time when replacing my doors from going doorless. Hope this helps.

How thick was the metal rod? Coat hanger or bigger?

bigger.

but you could use a coat hanger if you stuck it through, made a loop, and twisted the ends together

Coat hanger didnt work. Tried one zip tie and just kept making it tighter and tighter as I closed the door. Zip tie broke. Tried three zip ties (see first picture) and it worked!!!!! Closed it a little more and stuck the old pin in and popped it all the way. Took out the old pin and put the new one in and it's back to "status quo" except with a new pin (see second picture). So happy that I don't have to buy a new piece or anything!!!!!

Did you try new pins? The zip ties were to pull it out of the door so I could pit a new check arm pin in.

I'll have to check it out. But the bracket itself is like ripping off of the door lol

Ohh... if so and it's not the pin, I know jeep4x4center wants $60 just for one excluding the bracket. If you need it, send winston a message (he is one of the first commentors on the post). Before I fixed mine, he said he would take a look at some of his doors and he said he may be heading to the JY sunday and will also look. Shoot him a PM....

I have a 99 cherokee and the part from inside the drivers side door actually broke at the mounting braket on the inside. taking the door panel off and the speaker, its simply snaking your arm up to it and holding it in place while removing it with a torx bit from the outside. very simple. I have a decent supply of cherokee's out here in Las Vegas, Nevada so if anyone is in need, ill gladly make a trip to the junkyard to help. Generally run 5-10 bucks MAX.

Also generally 100% rust free

Alright that sounds good. Some guy wanted a manual door down here for $300. Many JY's don't part for part down here

to the OP, did you just put the zipties on the bracket and arm and slowly tighten them as you closed the door? I am having the EXACT same problem.

You have to check and see if it is actually broken. You have to take the door panel off and the speaker also. I think the bolts holding it on are 8 mm. the arm come s out through the speaker hole. The holes in the bracket also get egg shaped. New check arms are expensive. the junk yard is the best place to check. on the 4 door models, the rear door ones are smaller. door check #25523571AB,pin 255012900AB,bracket 255002361 the pin is also available in the help section at Oreilly auto parts(Dorman 38434)

I realize this is an old post but I figureed I'd post this for anyone who does a search.....

You'll have to pull the panel and remove the door check to repair this properly. Once you remove the check, clean it up really well. The original lube really gunks up and turns into a solid and no longer lubricates. Inspect the 2 rollers, pins and where the pins are pressed into the bracket. If they aren't wallowed out you can relube it and install it. If they are bodgered up, you can use a rear door check body with a front arm. They are the same only difference being the arms. Check the arm for burrs and worn spots and grind/file them down smooth. The body brackets can be rebushed way cheaper than buying new ones or you can find rear brackets that have less wear and use them in front. They are the same.... Hope this helps......
