Well I made some progress today in the heat :/
Pulled everything off and found out thermostat is a 180* made by motorad) I'm assuming it would run at 210 *now all the time with a 195* ??
I got the superstant part # 45359 195*f/90*c
There was a lot of excess RTV inside the thermostat housing too.
Why would someone put a 180 in there ?

Does anyone run a 180* therm?
Seem like it was taking along while to get up to 210* but when it did most of the time it would come back down, as long as I wasn't in Traffic.
But on my last drive going to the boat races my GPS took me for a loop and it seemed the fan was working pretty hard to keep it at 210*
(How do I tell if the thermostat is in stuck mode open or closed?) should I get any water pump for a 4.0 i6 1990 it's a mid year make 5/1990? Thanks again !

These engines are designed to run hot, and the 195° is the correct stat to use. My '90 runs at 195° even on 100+° days, unless I'm pulling my boat up a long grade, then it will go to around 210° or so and stabilize until I top the hill. It also warms to 195° within the mile on my dirt road prior to getting to the highway....about 5 minutes, regardless of outside temps.
Make sure your new water pump is a reverse rotation pump. The correct pump will have an "R" stamped on the impeller.

Here's a possibility in this case.
Low temp thermostat or a crappy one. I only use 52028186 from the dealer anymore.
Fan clutch is bad causing the rise in temps in traffic.
Replace them both.

Discovered my thermostat housing bottom bolt had been broke off in the head by previous owner and instead of tapping it out drilled a hole right next to it .
This would explain the excess RTVin the housing.
I never saw it actually leaking from that housing, but I did see it leaking from the top of the WP .
Am I totally screwed now. ?
Just waiting on a WP from Napa, guess I'll find out if it was the seal on the WP once I get it all back together.

Here's a pic of the housing if someone can chime in and tell me how smart this was to drill a new hole instead of tapping it out ??
Q. Can I tap out the remainder of this bolt without risking damage to the head?
If I did that is there a way to fill the hole in the head?
