Driving Cross Country - What should I check?

Luckily the new job is putting up in fully furnished pad so all I'm brining with me is my clothes, dog, snowboard n guitar. Basically it will all fit inside the jeep.

this may be a little off topic, but don't just get things for your jeep. a good first aid kit, some high calorie food or stuff that doesn't spoil and a blanket and maybe a small shovel as well if you had to stop in bad weather on the road these things will help you out I live in wyoming and weather can change here in a snap. make sure you have charged batteries, car charger to

Are you hauling much? Be careful with the diffs. Sometimes older/high mileage ones don't do so well when fluid is replaced. Maybe add a B&M tranny cooler. They are like 30 bucks, easy to install and takes the tranny cooling duties off the existing system. Good alignment, u joints, and some backup supplies are other thoughts..

Don't be afraid to go cross country.........

Get AAA. It is like $125/yr for the top end membership and you get a 200 mile tow. If something happens, especially in nowhereville, a 200 mile tow is some big bucks!!!
In case you do need a tow, $125 is cheap cheap cheap, and if nothing happens to you at all, at least you have AAA for a year. There are also some other perks that AAA has that might benefit you on this journey, especially if you do brake down or just need some help. Out of gas, flat tire, bad battery, travelers insurance, etc.

Plus a lot of places take AAA for discounts on items, hotel rooms, etc.
Also whatever state you go through, know their road side assistance # if the state has that service. Tennessee has TDOT, and they have vehicles that run up and down the freeways helping people who get flat tires, out of gas, etc, and may end up responding faster than AAA.
I have had help twice myself. Once here in TN, ran out of gas, and once in Texas on a road trip. Battery died and they came and jumped us off.

I just checked it out, for a 1yr membership for AAA was $120 for the best one they offered. I just called up my auto insurance, Geico, and added there roadside assistance program. Costs me $28 for a year and as I'm trying to pinch pennies couldn't pass it up.

You look set! Don't worry about traveling with your xj, I do it all the time 400 miles one way for two weeks out of town, also
As for letting it cool down etc, a motor runs the most efficient when at a constant rpm, also helps with wear, but your going to have to stop at least every 350-400 miles for gas XD

I made it!!!! And without a single hiccup. Jeep ran great, road conditions were beautiful. Averaged 19.6 mpg. 1720 miles is a long haul with no cruise control. Not looking forward to another trip like that for awhile.

I am from Sap Paulo, Brazil. In december 2009 i have traveled all over south america (Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Chile, Argentina and Paraguay. The only issue with my 1998 4.0 automatic XJ was a dead electric auxiliary radiator fan. Here is the tavel blog (in portughese but can be google read in english) http://1jipe.blogspot.com/
I used all sort of gasolines, I suspect that in Peru it was the worst, almost 30% of solvents. Engine handled fine. In the bolivian mountains at 5.000 meters high the engined heated a little due the effort caused by the lack of oxygen. Colant also boils at lower temp at higher altitude.
