I don't mean to rain on your parade but are you sure you have the correct return springs? When I did mine I used new hardware and I can remember those rear springs are pretty stout. They should pinch down on that wheel cylinder right now.

This is true, especially if they're full of air because they haven't been bled yet.

I know this is an old post. However I had the same problem with both sides and found the solution. Since I have gotten a lot of info from the forum I thought I would pass it on for the next guy.
I also got my 9 inch shoes (#538) and drums (#80002) from Autozone. Short version is the the semi circle on the top of the new shoes was too small. The anchor pin on my 99 XJ measured .685 . I built the new and old shoes in the new drums with the adjuster screw in and wedged the top end to seat shoes to the drum. With the dial gauge the two semi circles on the new shoes measured .590, the old set .833.
Since the new shoes where too small to go over the anchor pin the ends of the semi circles held the shoes out to far. Brought my little demo back to Autozone, they never seen any thing like it.(Surprise!) The only other set they had looked even smaller. Got my money back. The guy suggested I go to NAPA.

I just got done reading this entire post.... I have the same problem... new 9" brakes and drums from Advance Auto....The drum will not go on to either side..with the adjustors turned all the way in....I have been door brake shoe brakes for years on Chevy, and Fords. I have a 97 Jeep Sport as my fishing vehicle...I fly fish so the vehicle works great. I am sure I have the same problems with these POS Wearever brakes....So I am going where here in SC to find some Bendix Brake....I spend most of Sunday messing with these, when I should have been fishing...the guys are Advance were hopeless....they claimed the parts are good and my assembly method is bad... OK...we will see.. LOL..

Funny Top spin mentions Napa. I almost just posted, "go to Napa", then decided to read more of the thread.

Here is wise advice for the whole forum. If it's rear brakes, and they do not ask which rear-end you have, call someone else! I have a Dana 30. Zomby Zone and O'What'sthis will hand me parts for something else without asking. I live in the stix so wrote them off..

This thread represents one of the reasons why a rear disc conversion makes sense.

Well picked up a set of the Ultra-Premium shoes at Napa...about $50....twice the price of the set at Advance... put them ON....NO problem...drums when right on... The guy at Advance told me that it was my method....well...I will tell him a thing or two tomorrow. I spent two day on this problem. The exact same issue that " Topspin5" noted....I am now a NAPA guy.....Thank the Lord for this site...I will still go to Advance for Oil and Antifreeze..it is hard to screw that up....LOL...

Did Napa ask which rear end you have? That seems to be what makes the difference.

What tree are you guys barking up?

I can't fathom how rear end could possibly matter (unless MAYBE you're replacing your entire backing plate??), and I've NEVER needed to provide that info when buying drum parts. All you should need to know is whether you have 9" or 10" drums.

Agreed. I've done drums on 6 or 8 different vehicles. Never even mattered brand or make.

I mean really, yes there's a minor chance the items aren't perfectly true out of the box but that can be said for new pads, shoes, cylinders, calipers etc etc.

I doubt anyone pressure checks their calipers / wheel cylinders or measures their pads / shoes to make sure they're perfect.

It's so easy to just pull off a drum / rotor if it does happen to be out of round and resurface / replace.

IMO not worth the effort / time to check new off the shelf parts plus I don't know about you, but our local parts stores don't have anything to resurface with anyways.
So I'm struggling to get my drum over the rear brake assembly any suggestions it is new drums brakes and springs
