Dull thudding under driver side of transmission
Hello all.
I own a 2001 XJ, stock, auto, 70k miles. Had it for about 12 months now and can genuinely say its the most engaging vehicle I've ever owned.
Anyhow, I now have a niggling problem.
At idle, I can occasionally hear a repetetive dull thudding from under the transmission. If I press my hand onto the carpeted area where the driver side footwell meets the selector housing, I can feel a subtle knocking.
Any ideas? Recently had the mounts (engine and transmission) replaced, if this is of any relevance.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Did it do this at all before the mounts were replaced? What kind of mounts were used? If polyurethane, they are known for increased vibrations even though they last a lot longer

No, I believe this to be a new problem which wasn't apparent prior to the mounts being replaced. Mounts themselves are from Jeep, supplied and installed by the dealer.
I keep wondering whether they've not installed the transmission mount correctly or something. Or maybe there's something up with he exhaust.
It rattles occasionally at idle, usually when the idle starts to bob up or down (which it does intermittently, but not to any significant degree).

Hmmm yeah it sounds like the transmission mount is a good possibility. I don't believe that could be a problem with the exhaust but you could always rule that out by letting it idle and climb under there and observe the exhaust to see if it moves around enough to wear it could cause that

Check the trans mount..replace it, its only like 13 bucks at autozone! And then if it ever breaks you get a new one under warranty
I'd also check your control arm bushings and front drive shaft..check them for bad bushings or play in the drive shaft ujoint or double cardon joint!

Also if it's a 4x4 check to see if that lever is vibrating on idle...seems to be a common noise issue, if the linkage was taken apart for the repairs it could also be the culprit.
