Default EGR Tube Woes

Hello all, I bought my 1990 XJ a few weeks ago- my first car- and I had done no work on cars before this (so bear with me).
I just finished replacing my exhaust manifold last week. I had serious trouble getting the old one off as some bolts were seriously rust welded. My replacement manifold didn't come with a new EGR tube, so I tried to salvage the old one. In the process of getting it off, I bent it to hell and part of it tore. I considered trying to weld it up, but realized I would have a hard time getting it bent back into the right shape. I decided to plug the holes (she started right up ) and ordered the only replacement EGR tube I could find on the whole internet- I ended up paying $50 for the damn thing. Alas, when I went to install it, I found it wouldn't fit. The hardline pipe just wouldn't line up with the intake and exhaust manifold threaded holes.
I know EGR isn't essential to run, but I've read that it can help the engine run cooler and last longer, so I'd like to fix it if I can.
My first thought would be to cut out a section and weld in some flex pipe, but I can't find mild steel flex pipe with a 5/8in ID. (I think the EGR tube I have is mild steel, but not 100% sure I guess)
What do you think my options are?
Best,
Christian

Put plugs in the intake and exhaust. Forget the pipe.

If you're not subject to smog testing, I'd plug the holes in the manifold.

When I did my '88, I could not get the pipe out of the intake manifold. It came out of the exh OK. In my case I didn't tempt fate. I left it in the manifold. It was quite the juggling act to get the manifold on, but get the EGR pipe in straight enough to get the nut started. Effectively I was trying to manhandle the intake and exhaust manifold connected together with the egr pipe.

Since I live in CA, I have to preserve the factory emissions system in order to pass smog testing.

Default EGR Tube Fix

Just came across this EGR Tube fix write up this morning on Comanche Club.
Will be doing this to 89' Cherokee to pass Ca smog.
