Happy to accept your assessment of the XJ FSM - but the page count (of itself) means nothing; I have a couple of Cadillac FSM's (4,000 pages I seem to recall) and something like the 1st 10 pages of every section is the same same dire health & safety warnings.
I do remember my father got hold of a Parts Manual for one of his cars (no mean feat in those pre-internet days) which I remember was invaluable for its exploded diagrams.
As a former technician, soon as one needs to do electrical fault diagnosis, I am not sure how else one would go about it apart from Youtube (or as you say a forum )
Ah, as a former technician, much of the content would mean more to you than it would me: anything I couldn't "diagnose" with a test lamp, I probably wouldn't be able to fix anyway. I used to be pretty good with electrics, but electronics, forget it - I've learnt more about my limitations.
Of course I often work on equipment without referral to any manual, but it cannot hurt to have it and the answer to the PO problems resides within its pages . . .
No doubt you're right, but what I doubt is my ability to find, understand &/or apply the answer to any problem I might encounter.

I always encourage long term owners of any vehicle to download the relevant manuals, and make use of them
Most guys are very reluctant to tackle electrical work, and I can well understand this, but the very best way to learn is to just look in the manual, as it gives a detailed fault finding tree, and instructions on how to test..a bit of Youtube on how to understand terms, methods etc...its just like anything else, mechanics, welding, painting etc, some study, and practice is needed
Indeed I love my test light, but for electronics, a multimeter should be used in most cases, heck they are one of the cheapest and most useful tools for an XJ owner to have

I think we all try to help out in our own way, I have seen your good contributions
Thanks for the compliment - I never imagined that day would come,

It's not a bad philosophy, it's just that I got to the stage where I only really used them for torques, specs, bolt tightening sequences & capacities but as vehicles became more complex I found it more difficult to start learning again, so trying to make use of FSM's (particularly, I have to say, American ones) is very frustrating. But, that is me &, in no way, a reflection on the publication, or advocating their use.

I am, basically, a simple nuts & bolts guy, but have always liked electrics (or did, 'til I got my 1st XJ: those locking connectors still drive me to distraction!) but never found manuals much help because because all those faultfinding procedures might as well be in another language, they just don't talk to me.
