Electrical issues and questions
1987 4.0
Previous owner neglected just about everything on this jeep and especially the electrical. I have been tackling the electrical issues slowly along with renewing the rest of the jeep. Here is what I am trying to solve right now:
ECU- can reseting the ECU cause any problems? Just wondering...
TPS- is getting only 2 volts to it. Occasionally a high idle issue. Have been through entire wiring in engine bay. No shorts seen and grounds are clean and tight. 101 is thoroughly cleaned. Have replaced some sensors(TPS being one of them). The relays have not been replaced but i did clean them/connections up real well. Curious where else to look?
Steering Column- Horn has never worked, i have installed an old fashion air horn with a push button(works great). Turn signals do not cancel automatically. Is there anything in the column on a 87 that could be linked to problems with sensors and whatnot(other than horn and signals)?
Neutral switch- reverse lights have never worked. Added my own and they work just fine. Can the neutral switch(circuit) be linked to other problems?
Appreciate any info....

Resetting the ECU can't hurt because it doesn't reset.
Where are you checking for voltage to the TPS?
Turn signals not cancelling is the turn signal switch in the column.
Column will cause no problems with sensors.
Ever do tip 5 on my website?

Wow! I just stumbled on to your site Cruiser. I just bought an '88 XJ as a project to do with my son. The electrical is a huge mess under the hood. I honestly don't know how everything is working at this point. Thanks for the info on your site. I'm sure I'll need it.

Ok still looking into this electrical nightmare!!! The fatter black solo wire from ECU goes where? Its been chopped!!! My diagram via chilton doesn't tell me crapolla.... Kinda reminds me of an antenna wire, just saying! I did do the solder connection for the sensor grounds bypassing the 101. Did make a difference. Before ground test at TPS was a journey between 19 ohms and 136 ohms and after at 1.6 ohms!!! But still dealing with freaking Freddy Krueger if you know what i mean...

After doing a little midnight surfing and viewing all kinds of diagrams, looks like one of three possibilities: some funky looking ground wire, possible to A/C or maybe to Neutral switch. Not sure if i caught the right wave, but i guess in the morning gotta tweak the back a bit and see if i can find the other end up in the dash somewhere and trace it?

But hey this old flip phone has been ran over by the jeep, left out on a jeep trail, left on the PCT(twice) and still finds its way home and in working condition...

update: upon looking further and taking apart, that cable/wire was just jammed in there. Not sure what it once went to or why there but it not connected to anything...

Did i say i hate electrical!!! After stretching, reaching, tweaking the back a bit (ECU out and then back in) and then nothing when turning the key and i mean not a peep!!!! Pissed me off! ECU out and then back in again and now were ok. Jeep starting good and sounding good regardless of ohms and voltage readings... I just don't know!!! Luckily we live in the boonies so smog is not a requirement, therefore sensors mean sh..!!! Eventually would like to get it straight though...
