You probably won't. Call wrecking yards. They will pull one for you. Also there is a rod that is under neath the column that goes down to the actual switch on the bottom side down by the brake pedals. Make sure you have that also.

Would there be any way to determine which of the exposed wires is for my head lights? Perhaps I can just rig up a toggle switch to get it to work instead of having to replace the entire column.

Actually it would be the exact opposite. Infact destroying the column like that is how a bunch of thieves start a vehicle without the key. Howlong have you had this jeep? Are you 100% sure that it isnt stolen? Id be checking into that real hard if i were you. If not tho and the POs story is legit then i hope you get the lights figured out....

Exactly, that's what Big95XJ is talking about. I got my 95 GC Laredo from a friend/garage owner who gave me the Jeep. The VA highway patrol asked him to tow it and was sitting in his fenced yard for two years and it was abandoned. The steering column looked exactly like that when I got it bec. it was stolen and left on the side of the interstate.

Replace the steering column with a good JY column. Make sure to get a key(s) with it. Paint to match if you have to or just paint it black.
I also have an '87 and the headlight dimmer switch is activated by pulling the turn signal stalk straight back, then releasing.
It is actually GM's "Smart Switch". Built for AMC by the same supplier.
If you could by a new column assembly today it would be around $1000.00.
