So I am doing a rebuild on my engine, I have been following everything down to a T. Recently I tried turning my crank to get my wheel aligned at zero. All of the sudden it’s really hard to turn. It almost sounds like water hitting a warm engine. Any ideas on what that could be. I really don’t want to take everything apart. However it seems I have to

Give us a little more info

I presume you turned it over occasionally while building to ensure all was well, but now have it full of coolant ?,,,somewhere in between ?

Are the spark plugs in it ? Is it in vehicle etc etc

However if you want to shortest possible answer to your question, that will be a yes (hey, I can be wrong happens every day)

After taking the head off, it was very easy to turn. I don’t remember it being so hard to turn while it’s on the engine

so I don’t have any coolant or anything in yet. It is all dry. Not even in the car. When I had it in the jeep I never heard any time of “air” or anything

If your engine cranks ok with head off, but does not want to rotate by ratchet on crank bolt, and especially if you had the head and block skimmed, and fitted new camshaft and lifters (which you said you did)

Then my next step would be to make a systematic inspection of whether your pushrods or some other components are not binding

I do not have sufficient experience on these engines to give you adequate guidance, other than to say search the archives in this sub-forum on that topic of checking pushrod length on rebuilt engines.

I am pretty sure there is an exact way of checking, it may be covered in the FSM, Engine Chapter, have you followed that ?

Just throwing it out there, but the next thing I would probably try, before ****ting my pants would be to loosen of the rocker gear and see if it rotates ok then

What you're doing doesn't make any sense, at least the way you are describing it.

If I am following this at all correctly you have the head on but no rockers...so all the valves are closed all the time.
Is the engine impossible to turn, like the pistons are hitting the head or just harder to turn than you think it should be.... because you're trying to compress a bunch of air with the valves not opening.
At least it's unlikely the pistons are hitting the valves.

You need to get some on site diagnostic help.

Yeah I’m trying my best to explain. So I guess I’ll try putting the rockers on to see if that helps before I try anything else
