There are two sets of two wires each down by my trans. One is plugged in, and the other two are just dangling. In the Haynes book it gives a diagram of continuity checks for the neutral switch, and it looks to have six conductors, so maybe neither of the things I'm looking at are that one. I wonder if the two loose wires got pulled out of the connector...need to take a closer look. I am also getting very suspicious of the EGR, as the engine will idle fine and then every once in awhile almost die. The stuttering USUALLY seems to kick in in 3rd or 4th gear, but has done it in the low gears too.

So far I have learned more than I ever thought possible about engine sensors and emissions.....thanks to the guys on the forum here, at NAXJA, and a few other places.

Here's a synopsis: Haynes manuals don't discuss engine sensors for RENIX Jeeps, 1987-1990.

Here are two links to more info: http://www.lunghd.com/Tech_Articles/...iagnostics.htm

http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billav...ion_manual.pdf

Definitely invaluable for RENIX owners. Mine is tricky because the stock airbox has been removed so I need to go through the entire vacuum system and make sure everything is correct.

Gotchya, Mine has the Rustys K&N setup.... I think Im about to make a thread about my issue, ive done a bunch of searching and couldnt find anyone with my problem so.... who knows

start checking sensors....if the emissions controls are off, nothing will run right. also eliminate the fuel delivery and ignition system.

Sounds like an injector problem to me. Especially when it's mostly fine at idle and then gets worse under loads...???

Default Recap

Well I have narrowed it down a bit more. I believe the two loose wires are for a transmission speed sensor. At any rate, there is a guard (actually it's the bracket for the transfer case shift linkage. Two t case nuts have to be removed. no big deal) on the trans that has to come off to see where those wires go....and that means undoing some of the t-case nuts if not removing the whole thing. Haven't got that far yet. I have checked my fuel pressure, 40+ with the vacuum off the regulator, 32 with it on. Don't think it's the fuel pump. Also stopped some vacuum leaks, now it idles at 1000 rpm instead of 500. Those two wires....sorry no pic, drivers side, near the t-case linkage. If I twist them together the Jeep runs good for awhile. Then gets crappy again. Untwist, drive, re-twist, it will run nice for a bit. Seems like it tricks the computer temporarily. I unplugged the TCU, and it runs great in 1. Put it in 3, the stumbling begins. 3 or D, same thing. So whatever those wires go to I betcha has something to do with telling the computer what gear it's in and it's not getting the right info. That's where I'm at. Next is to pull that guard off and locate something that looks like it needs wires.

Yep, I finally got some 703 injectors from a couple Dodge Neons in the JY and it cured all my troubles.
