Engine harness wiring
Im having a hard time finding a decently priced 98 engine wiring harness, and was curious if I could use one from another year?I know they made some changes in 97 but wasn't to sure if I could take the harness from a 96 or 99 and it work correctly.if anyone could confirm I can...or can not and if so which years are compatible

1996 is for sure a NO go wont work.
Parts Manual shows the 1997-1998 engine harness numbers to be the same depending on transmission and transfer case, 56009776 Auto trans, 4wd, NP231J T-case, 56009777 Auto, 4wd, NP242J T-case.
The 1999 have same part numbers with the addition of "AD" prefix at the end, I suspect there were prior revisions AA, AB, AC as well
I would say the 1997-1999 harnesses would work, usually if there is any significant changes to a part Jeep will issue a new part number.
2000-2001 won't work because they are coil pack engines and two upstream O2 sensors in the manifolds.

Glasply has done the work for you
Yes, a 99 will be your best bet
96 was the crossover year, perhaps a (very) late 96 could have the 'update' but I wouldn't count on it.

Thanks I appreciate it, I got in touch with a local who has quite a few part jeeps. So luckily he has a 98 wiring harness that I should be picking up tomorrow.

So i finally got the correct wiring harness so i think....upon looking the said harness over, i noticed this connector has an extra pin in it compared to mine? The one thats missing and the pin to the left of that is missimg on my harness, but this one has the second pin?will this cause issues?

I was hoping to put this bad boy on this weekend, but really don't want to put effort into doing so if this wiring harness will not work or cause other issues, if anyone could confirm it does or doesn't matter about the pins

will the connector physically fit ?
if so check the circuit/pinout diagram in the FSM to check what the electrical connection is
cut a wire if need be.
Make a record of what you did for future reference

So I did alot of digging, may of found the connector and circuit but not really following...so the clip i found was the c107 clip and its cavity 2.That shows circuit k20.so I trace the wiring diagram to the charging system, thats the only system I find that uses circuit k20,that goes to the generator field driver?so I read up and that supposedly helps regulate voltage...
So my question is can I run this just the way it is without altering said harness, and also if anyone wants to double check my findings and confirm them id appreciate that aswell.
IM SO READY TO LAY THIS GREMLIN TO REST
