I've seen a few threads on adding engine oil coolers to help keep oil in its most efficient operating temperature range, but most of the guys who do it live in a climate where the outside temp doesn't dip below 60 in the winter... i live in NY where its hot in the summer ~90's but cold in the winter ~10's. would an engine oil cooler make sense? I'm worried about keeping the oil at a happy temp during the hotter months but i'm afraid excessive cooling may occur during winter, and i dont want the oil being too viscous.

Also, what do you guys think is better? a tranny fluid cooler or an engine oil cooler? I'm trying to decide which is more beneficial to the vehicle. I understand that the cause of most transmission problems is overheating, but i feel like ive seen a lot more mods where people install oil coolers instead. Any thoughts?

 

The minimum thing you will need is a tranny oil cooler. Heat is the great enemy of auto trannys. You can change to synthetic oil and beat some heat that way, but if you wheel and are slipping the torque converter at all you will need to dissipate the heat generated, which will be considerable. So between the two, go for the tranny cooler.

That being said, an engine oil cooler will help you cool the XJ engines, which are prone to run warm due to the design of the cooling system and body configuration. Hood vents help a lot since the underhood area does not breath well.

 

if you do a water oil cooler you will be fine..........however i would do a tranny cooler.

Can or should you do both? I'm planning on installing a tranny oil cooler, but there's a Craigslist deal for a new oil cooler that's mighty tempting ($50). Having both would make it awfully crowded up front and it wouldn't be doing the radiator any favors. And is it necessary? I know it's tranny before oil, but can or should you do both?
