Default Engine Overheat- Maybe Transmission Issue???

Hi All,

Have had a couple overheat issues. Water pump was replaced a few months back. Then drove 1 1/2 hours and it suddenly started overheating. Tow to shop, and they found no issue with coolant system and couldn't replicate, but did replace thermostat and fan clutch just in case that was it. Drove it back home with no issues, and temp remained normal ever since including highway and city.

Last night, drove 45 min. on highway with no problem, bought a couple waverunners and was towing back home. Only about 1000lb. weight. After about 15 minutes on the highway noticed a smell and felt like driving with the parking brake partially on (it wasn't) and it overheated. Stopped, shut off and restarted and it immediately cooled back down to normal. Made it another 5 miles, same thing repeated several times. Each time I'd stop, go to park, and if I'd run engine about 1200 rpm it would cool back down. Then got on side roads for rest of the trip back home and it did fine, but would start slightly heating over it's normal temp at stop lights and hills for the last 15 miles or so.

Have towed 5000lb boat multiple times before with no issues, and no issues today. Have changed tranny fluid and filters last year due to clogged filter causing back pressure and killing engine when backing out of garage and shifting to drive, with no issues with that since. Is it possible a torque converter issue was causing extra resistance on the engine? Definitely not a coolant or circulation issue. Verified no issues with trailer axle or bearings, and coasting down hills in neutral there was nothing acting like it was slowing it down.

Thanks for any insight.

I am currently having an overheating issue and wondering if the cause is from the transmission. I am not pulling anything though.
