Engine replacement
I just found out today that my 4.0 needs to be replaced or rebuilt. I'm just not sure which route would be more cost efficient or the best way to take. It's only got 187k, so I'm pretty disappointed, but I bought it used with 182K and who knows how that guy treated it. Still with a 3" lift, safari basket, 31s and pretty clean for $1700, I can really complain. All suggestions will be considered. Thanks guys and gals.

Jasper engines are probably the best. They run $3200-3800 or so plus pulling and putting. They can have up to a 3 year warranty depending on what options you choose.

I am in the process of rebuilding mine myself. Same mileage as your, had a rod knocking. I found a block and crank on Craigslist for $150, had the machine work done, bought a rebuild kit online for $535, including new hypereutectic pistons, cam, timing set, lifters, gaskets, oil pump.....etc etc....all in all I will end up spending less than 2K, and the good thing is, I know whats in the engine, and that it is assembled properly. Being a 1992, its been pretty labor intensive cleaning everything up, but it should be really clean and reliable when done.

Go ahead. Spend 3+ times the amount.
I've never had to pull a motor after install, and like I said, I've done several.
And if the OP can't do any or all of the work himself, what does it matter? You'll still be way ahead if you have to pay labor twice, rather than shelling out 3k+ for what you suggest. Even then, the shop, if they are a decent shop, wont charge labor twice.
That's insane.

It wouldnt be long before that "decent shop" went out of business. You paid for the labor.. not a guarantee that the engine will run properly.
Take a look at engine rebuilders, most decent rebuilders will cover the labor to shop if a warranty were needed. I have personal experience with Jasper on this when my oilpump failed at 2 years and 25K miles into a 3/50K warranty.

If a person was to bring their Jeep in along with a junkyard engine that they are providing--and that engine was bad after you charged them to put it in--are you saying that they could then bring engine after engine to you, and you would put them all in for free? Until you found a good one?
Wow.

And we are now going quite far into the relm of what ifs and hypotheticals.
Go ahead, spend 3000$ plus on a remanned motor.
But you can't tell me its more economical than spending less than a grand on a warranteed JY motor.
