Engine Swap
I have a 2000 jeep cherokee, the connecting rod bearings are going so I need to swap it with an engine, they are saying 1000 for an engine is good but i feel its too much so I am looking for another years engine. i am looking to see what year jeep cherokee engines i can use, if any modifications are necessary if it isnt a 2000 0r 2001. Any tech info or referals, etc will be useful. Thanks Ryan

I think anything 97+ will work, you just have to modify the coil on plug setup to work in place of the distributor setup.
I'm pretty sure someone else here was doing/has done it. I don't remember if he ever figured it out or not.

well the body of the jeep is going, rust etc and i dont wanna spend a ton of money on a new car so i just wanna keep the cost down as soon as posible. I was hoping i could use an older engine, below 2000 because there are a lot of them oout there, but didnt know what would work because of various changes to the engine over the years

I bought a "93" cherokee engine off a buddy for 200bucks. I put it in my 2000 cherokee. In all I probbily spent 400-450 ( I had to buy a engine stand and other tools, plus oil, filter, gaskets)

I had to swap over my valve cover and all the sensors. Also make sure you swap the flex plate over. The older engines had different slots in the flex plate and the computer in your jeep will be set up to run your flex plate. You will also have to swap the oil pump drive and cam shaft posistion sensor (where the distributer would be), your computer will want this also. Then you will have to make some brakets to hold your ignition coil in place. I got a chunk of flat steel from the hardware store and made two brakets (one front, one rear). Run a bolt through the mounting hole on the coil, attached the bracket to it, then attach the other end of the bracket to the valve cover. I also grounded each of the mounting holes of the coil to the block.
