Default Engine temp rises above normal at idle

Search yielded one thread that I felt was relevant, but didn't really fully answer my question.

With the cooler weather lately, I haven't had to use the AC, so at lights and when stopped, I notice the engine temp gets up over the normal midway point on the guage cluster. Its drops back down to normal when moving again.

Fan comes on when AC is on, so I am assuming its not fan related.

Jeep has 128K miles. I am not sure of the maintenance history, so I have started to address items one at a time.

You guys think it may be one of the following:

- thermostat
- coolant flush
- water pump
- anything else?

Hoses look to have been replaced not too long ago. I did notice the serp belt will need to be replaced soon......not sure of relevance to this issue, but figured I'd mention it.

Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

When the fan comes on does your temp start to drop?

Yes. I've never had an overheat issue, just a what I like to call a "hotter than I want to see the gauge" issue.

Midway or operating temp is what, 210? Will double check when I go back out in a few.......but I'd say maybe 220-230? Next line before the red is what, 240 I think, right? Doesn't hit that, but has come kinda close to it.

For sure replace the mechanical fan clutch, rad cap and possibly the radiator. Does the a/c condenser have bent fins, filled with mud? Is your gauge divided up like this?

220-230 is no problem, 250....get a little worried.

I thought I read that if the fan came on when the AC was on, it was def not a fan related issue?

Not an off-roader, so no mud on the fins.

Rad shows no signs of damage or extended age, so what's the reasoning on changing that out? Just curious....

Think I am gonna pass on the local seller.....$30 for a can is a bit much for me.

Found someone selling a 2 pack kit with 1 free can of BG MOA. Any comments on this BG product? Do you just add in a can when you change the oil?

So you are saying the second one could be bad? I believe both come on with the AC, no? I'm gonna check later.

So there it is, Your E fan should come on at 218 without the AC. And if your temp start to drop when your efan comes on then it sounds like all systems work fine besides the part that tells your Efan to turn on. I can't think of the name but i think its the temperature sending unit. If that part name is wrong, someone will correct me.
Now i would not buy that part till someone confirms that the temp sending unit is what causes you fan to come on at 218

Edited ; Actually i just looked up the temp sending unit and got that its only job is to report the temp (should have been common sense, lol)

So someone please post what the part is called that tells you efan to come on around 218

Thanks

The main rad fan is belt driven, the secondary rad fan is electric. The main fan has a viscous clutch and the clutch won't last but maybe 3-5 years and should be replaced. The main rad fan (belt driven) moves the most air unless the clutch is weak/bad.

I've got a new, stock radiator and all other related parts are fine. Mine sits on 210 unless it's idling for some time, then creeps up until the electric fan comes on around 220 and then sinks back down to 210. Periodically, driving down the road, I'll notice it is below 210...but no usually.

This is, IMO, perfect. It is Normal.
