Default EVAP small leak

Hi: 2015 Sport. After the wife got gas -Jersey, so some attendants are rough - she got the gas-cap symbol next to the odometer. She tightened the cap, but it didn’t help. After a couple of days, the CEL came on. “Small leak”. Cleared it. The gas cap symbol stayed on. The valve in the cap is good as I can’t push air through it, but I can pull with effort, I flipped the seal on the cap, which looks fine. I put silicone grease on those parts. Another few days, still a CEL, same small leak.
I git the wheel well off and pulled the device from the canister. This was dusty and rattles. Actually, looked good, but I cleaned it with dawn soap and water. What I see is a cylindrical slug with a small suction cup like thing in the end. I see some posts that this thing is an integrity module, and others calling it a pump. But, the internet pictures also have a pump looking like another device. This other device is located on my vent tube close to the filler neck.
I’m wondering, what does the measuring of this leak? How does it work? BTW, I think I heard the integrity module ‘burping’ or something, but no noise from the pump, if that’s what that is. The CEL just came on today, again.. Probably the same small leak.
This has happened before and we took it to a dealer, who fixxed it and other things. They broke the clip off the compartment filter door, and they must have thrown some meat in there that eventually started rotting. That smell eventually went away.
But, the “small leak” tells me it’s at least functioning. Any ideas? I’m thinking now, maybe the pump pipe-seal is leaking, but I smell no gas. It does spin on the pipe, with what looks like those push-on pipe fittings, with an o-ring in them. It would be stressed if a rough filling attendant monkey’d with the filler neck.
If the integrity module is a measuring device, is it a reed switch? Counting off columns of gas vapor?
Thanks
Harry

2015 Sport is not an XJ. You may do better in the KL forum.

I would have started with a new gas cap. As you saw, it takes a few days for the evap to complete it's test and for the readiness monitor to complete (or throw a code). Get a new cap. If it doesn't fix it, return it, or keep for a spare if it fits another one of your vehicles. I carry one for my '88 just in case.

I am so glad my newest car is 31 years old, Id hate to put up with all the sh.. on newer cars. Cant imagine the problems like this will go away as the car ages.
