I have never used premium in any vehicle I have ever owned. At least not on a regular basis. Every once in a while I would run a tank of premium through a few of my cars.

Diesel, I'm missing your point. Do you get good mileage with that Shell Potion? I wonder what Vektron is/does?

Jeroen, you are a engineer who was involved in engine design and you don't understand that if your running 100% gasoline you will get better mileage than running 90% gasoline.
More BTUs, that is the answer! It isn't about premium and regular grades of gas it is about not having to run Ethanol!
The only time I run gas with Ethanol in it is when I can't buy something without it and in the winter to keep moisture out of my fuel tank and fuel lines

Not like the 6-7 MPG mentioned.
Actually, I moved from Europe to the US a little wile ago and I hadn't realized untill now that Ethanol gets mixed in the petrol. Is that common practive troughout the US?
It's only starting to happen in some European countries. I do know that Ethanol can create problems in older cars as some of the materials in for instance carburator systems and even injection systems dissolve over time due to the ethanol.

.............The only reason to run mid-grade or premium afterward is to lower the amount of carbon build up in the engine due to the fuel burning cleaner. .............Running an occasional tank of premium is good for your engine as it helps clean it out a little..........

Well, I understand the bit about ethanol. But as Ethanol has about 75% BTU compared to Petrol, so with a 10% mix you should get a 2.5% MPG improvement at best. In practice it's probably less than half that. And that's really hardly noticable.

That is what I get in my 2005 F150 so what ever you think the results would be these are the result I get in my pickup.

Well after driving for the last 6 years with my car which requires premium, it's kinda habit. So today while filling up the Jeep I just tapped the premium button, didn't even notice till it was full. Oops, oh well.
Anyways, i noticed almost immediately that my engine was quieter. In terms of valve train noise. I have a slight tick being it has 170k miles on it, and nearly as soon as I started it back up it was noticeably quieter. Why would that be? I know higher octane has better resistance to knock or detonation but didn't think it would affect valve train noise?
On the subject, is there anything I can do to permanently reduce the noise? I use an oil stabilizer and high mileage synthetic oil already. It doesn't appear to leak or really burn any although I notice my oil pressure is around 10psi lower than what it should be.

Also on a related note. Running regular in a car tuned for premium can have reverse affects. My car factory required premium and I once filled it with regular on accident. It bucked and jerked and was noticeably down on power. Then, after my supercharger was installed, it was re-tuned and again for premium only. My brother borrowed it once and put regular in it. The car basically went into limp mode, my CEL came on, if I went into boost it would start detonating.

Second statement is argued back and forth and I also forgot to put the ".." around cleans. My fault. Like I said though, the best thing to do it tear it apart and clean it. That's the real answer for anyone with a high mileage engine (over 100k).

I put premium in last fill up.
Now my tires are going flat. Why?
LOL, J/K!!!!!! I think I am going to use premium all the time. My Jeep seems to like it. She's spoiled, I think.

I run Shell Vpower through my jeep because if I don't I get pinging (preignition?) when climbing hills or accelerating. My cylinders probably have higher compression because of crud buildup, and what I probably need to do is take the thing apart and clean it out thoroughly. Seafoam through the gas tank didn't make the ping go away, but increasing the octane did. I can't say it increased my mpg at all, but it's cheaper than an engine teardown.
I had never thought of crud buildup affecting compression, maybe thats why my 84 ford Bronco 300 6cyl has 170psi of compression? And yes the gauge is working properly 170 psi compression on a 4.9l ford inline 6
