I think your question is: "If I just get a catalytic converter with no muffler will my check engine light turn off?" Right?
No, it won't turn off until you find out what the error code is (if you have a check engine light you have an OBD-1 or OBD-2 error code) and replace the part that is causing the error code. Then, in most cases, you'll have to reset the computer to clear the code. You can have your codes scanned by most auto stores. Running your rig without a muffler will make it loud (maybe illegal) and you might not have the correct back pressure, which could hinder performance. No cat and you won't pass emissions.

if the code is for a coverter, thats all that needs to be replaced to correct to problem. The check engine light will have to be cleared with a scan tool. most auto parts stores read/clear codes for free

You may already be aware of it, but you will need a cat that has the port/bung for a downstream O2 sensor as well as the O2 sensor. OBDII has two O2 sensors. The upstream O2 and the downstream O2 are NOT the same.......different parts.
