was at the junkyard today and came across an 89 Cherokee that has a roof rack in perfect condition. My 87 rack was removed by previous owners. Going to swing by and scoop this up but was wondering if anyone knows off hand how its mounted to the actual roof? I noticed some screws on the top rails so that should be easy but curious about the mounting inside the roof? Im guessing ill have to remove the headliner to access any mounting bolts or nuts?

Did the PO weld over the holes? They're called well-nuts.

I think the skid strips (rails in-between) use some kind of double sided tape.

thank you so much, that diagram is very helpful. The previous owner did not weld over the holes, have some daylight peaking through all the holes. but i can ****** the others from the junkyard. Thank you again

finally getting around to installing the roof rack. Got the headliner removed everything is ready to install. I tried re-using the well nuts from the junkyard but they fell apart when i was trying to separate from the screw. Been looking around for these well nuts and found several places that have them, only found on e place that sells a box of them but theyre in a box of 10 I need 12. didnt realize these guys are so expensive. Wondering if anyone knows of a comparable item? Napa has a box of them but not sure the size of the original to compare if it will work. I suppose I could always use some washers and nut but would like to install as intended. If anyone knows of a cheaper alternative to the original please let me know

Besure to seal the threads for water leakage. The factory manual tells you to use 3M Drip Chek automotive sealer on the threads. Failure to do this will result in rain water pouring. In California, Drip Chek is not allowed do to nutty regulations, so I used Form a gasket sealer. Plumbers sealing putty will probably work fine too.
So seal them threads!!!

I had two missing fasteners on roof rack. I glued a washer to a nut so that it would stay on a box wrench while you snaked it in place. It has held tight for 3 years now.
