Factory Sunroof Info Thread
Dear all members,
Since it is a fact that some of the XJs did come with a factory sunroof/moonroof, can anyone chime in on the subject with some info? I'm looking for:
-Different variations through the years
-Pictures of each variation
-Facts on how they work, etc.
-Trim levels that had the option available
-Why the heck my 89 Limited doesn't have one
-Any other general info or comments
I'm also hoping to make this a sticky, since it comes up often between my buddies and I and I've done a ton of research without much luck. Keep this thread to mostly information please, so it can become a sticky of some kind for those readers that do have the rare option. Maybe it'll make the Jeeps worth a ton more, who knows?
I give a big thanks to anyone who can help in this, I feel that many people are wondering the same things I am and this thread can answer all their questions.
Thanks again and take care,
XJ.89.Limited

My '92 Sport has one, it's manually operated and lifts up at the back. I'm debating if it's OEM or after market, the hinges look similar to the ones for the lift gate so I'm not sure. It leaks though, it's ruined my headliner this past year so I'm not too happy with it.
You can kinda see it in here, close ups to come tomorrow if I remember.

My '89 Laredo had one. It was pretty nice. Crank style to open, it could be detached too. It even had little drain tubes that dumped excess water down the A pillar into the cowl so it didn't pool around the seals.

I just sold a 89 Laredo 2dr with factory power sun roof. It leaks. No headlined in there now. Power is not working.

Yeah I take it mine is OEM now. Sorry it rained last night, couldn't be bothered to wipe it down lol. I think mine has drain tubes that broke or something.

Got one in my '95 sport. Power. Leaked like a b****... took Permatex's contact cement and resealed the weather strip... and also used clear silicone around the whole seal to top it off. Hasn't leaked since.

My 88 Comanche has a sunroof. Here's a picture of the Comanche, you might be able to see it. I guess it was a dealer build option on mine. Everything else is manual such as locks, windows, bench seat, 4 speed transmission.

SWEET! Thanks for all the replies guys, I never thought there would be so many so soon. So I'm starting to think that maybe after the renix years, they changed the way it works and updated it a bit. I saw one at a JY that had the crank up version, and it was an 89 limited. Didn't seem to leak either because the headliner was perfectly fine. My buddy has an old case for one that is made to tie down in the back on the cargo rails if anybody needs it. I'm sure he would sell it. I'm thinkin this was a dealer installed option only. Let's hope to see more pics of them!
