Master, I REALLY like your thoughts on the recovery thing. I gotta beef up the jeep before I lift her or do anything serious off roading. Which means de-rusting her, and fixing all the "loose ends" she has.....Thanks!

hahaha. Yeah, being in South Central Pa, I'm more in Eagles country than steelers...but there's a good mix here. I could see myself doing just the steel sign on the back window or something......other than that, she's staying the BLACK baby....eventually want to go with flat black wheels...

anyways...

The first upgrade I did after buying my XJ was a complete tune-up and fix all the oil leaks, valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket and rear main seal.

Almost a year after buying my XJ I installed the 4.5" lift and 32" mudders at the same time. TOTALLY changed the personality of my XJ.

Yeah, a lift changes the look of the whole Jeep. It doesn't even look like the same vehicle!!

Well JessieJeep if you are looking to do an inexpensive modification and black wheels are in your plans, you could always paint them yourself. I did mine myself and it was real simple, took about $60.00 and a Saturday to do it. The very first thing I did to my XJ was to slap on a homemade intake, whick only took about $40-50 bucks and just about an hour to do. Oh yeah, and if you are really into the whole "black baby" look, you could even consider grabbing a can of VHT nightshades and smoking the tail lights, front corner lenses and turn indicators black. When I did that to my truck I really thought it set it apart from the other XJs in town, and it was only like a $25.00 mod, including the scotchbrite pads and the clearcoat. ...i like. I'm a big fan of using your own talents to create a look/performance rather than buying into the name, ya know? I don't know about smoking the lights-the local police are dinks about that type of stuff......we'll see....

I have grand cherokee wheels on it now (from the previous owner)-they're about mid-90's edition with the darker gray inserts? I like the for the most part, but I like the all black look. I don't know how easy they would be to sand down and paint..?

Are they the alloy rims?

Alot of sanding to remove ANY clearcoat that may peel.
The best to use some sort of adhesion promoter (Can often be found in the rattle-can section of any autoparts store)

Then apply a good quality wheel paint. Clear coat (satin finish or glossy...depends on your tastes)

Recommended: A/T tires or grabbier. I really resent letting my jeep go so long without new tires.
