Default Fixing rust/resto

New member here. Well, The famous NY rust has taken its toll on the xj. I was thinking about fixing the rust or restoring the jeep back to its rust free glory. The rust has gotten into the uniframe bad over the gass tank is bad.
I was thinking about stripping it down to the bare body and start cutting rust.
Does anybody have any suggestions on how i should go about it?
What about a rust free totaled body and cut what i need from that and weld it in?
should I just part it out and let it go?

Here are some pics of what it looks like.

I can poke a screwdriver through.

Still somewhat solid.

It may not pass inspection after this year according to a local shop.

I'm not a big fan of starting with bad XJ's and building upon them and fixing things so I'm probably bias.

With that in mind if you can actually stick a screw driver through a majority of the frame I would part the thing out.

Thanks for the reply. I was afraid it was too far gone. I guess part out is in the future.

No problem at all. I just meant that someone else on the forum decided to part out their Cherokee this week as well. Sorry for your loss

its too late for this OP, but I cant understand why owners do no inject the unirail cavities with rust retardant chemicals, under road salt conditions

a method I have used is to mix used engine oil with used ATF, and spray at 50psi with a long nosed gun into every hole, allow it to run out on rags

I live literally right beside the ocean. My local rustproofer, in business for over 50yrs, does the same thing, but uses deodorised fish oil. You only need less than 1 gallon to do an XJ

I wonder the same thing. Its a good idea. It doubles the life of the bodies in the salt belt. I have owned this jeep for two years so the rust was already there. If I end up with a clean xj I'll spray it down or park it in the winter. Thanks for the reply!

I do this with Fluid Film before every winter. I use that long extension wand with the nozzle on the end.

My pop used to put oil in every door, rocker panel and any other cavity he could access or drill a hole to access, then park the car with cardboard under it for a few days while it drained out. He never had a rust spot on his cars. He learned that from the Germans when he was in post-war Germany. They would spray machine oil over the bottom of the cars. They had pits they parked over and mechanics would spray the undersides. Kind of messy but very effective in preventing rust.
