9 times out of 10 the nss just needs to be removed, dissembled and cleaned. I dont know what a safety inspection in your area requires, be here they need to be functional to be passed. And your also on the hook if someone hops in and accidently starts in gear and runs someone over. Its just better to do it right.

Heres the link for how to remove, dissemble and clean them.

if this is going to be your DD then you should definitely replace the NSS, not bypass it. Grab one from a jeep at the local junkyard (or your buddy's), clean it up so it works, and install it. There is no way it will pass VA inspection without that component working - especially since it controls the reverse lights.

Instructions for cleaning the switch so it works can be found here:

I get 18 mpg with 4.10 gears and 31" tires with about a 60/40 split between two lane country roads and city. I'd expect 20+ on expressway and 13 or 14 in town. I don't baby it but don't beat it either.

You gotta also factor in the "free" element...and the cost of maintaining a truck. My truck is an F350 and everything on it is big and expensive. I'd rather wear out the XJ's little bitty brakes and tires and tie rod ends, etc. My truck has a V10 that makes about 10MPG on average (60/40 split). Every thousand miles saves me about $300 in gas, wear, and tear.

Well I replaced the brake shoes and when I got it all back together I didn't have an pressure. I must of hit the right wheel cylinder because that's the only place I could find any fluid. I did bleed them but it didn't do anything. I'll pick up a new one tomorrow I guess.
