My xj has always stayed just below 210 on the gauge. I didnt know that it was a problem..... While offroading I do notice it go over 210 but it never goes much past that before going back to just under 210 after the fan kicks in. One time I had to turn the jeep off for it to go back to under 210 while offroading but that was after doing a lot of muddy hill climbing in 4 low.

My transmission tunnel has never gotten that hot though. Mine gets hot but not that hot.

I think if the thermostat was really bad it would go way over 200 if it were closed or stay below 200 if it were open from what you are saying. The thermostat is designed so that it will open at a certain temperature so that the engine does not over heat but will closed until it reaches that temperature.

Check your coolant lines. I can look in the fsm tomorrow and see if there is the possibility of something else

There is a joke that xj's do not need heated seats, because they have heated floors. If you could actually cook an egg on the floor, you may want to look into that a bit, but mine is fine and I cant touch the shifter for more than 2 seconds without letting go.

With the temp, they have a 210 tstat in it, so you are right where you should be with your temp.

that was my problem, my exhaust broke next to transfer just before caty and muff. it started to get really hot in the back seat every time i drove for more than 20 min (and i still have carpet). but that would not explain why the engine is over heating (i didnt catch if it was or not)

i could also be totally off on what is going on here.
