Default Floor/Carpet Sound Deadening/Insulation

Floor/Carpet

Hello,
I'm doing my floor soon and want to make sure what's under the carpet is insulation/sound deadening material? I'm guessing I can remove it and use something like Kilmat? But It seems thin for insulation. I live in Canada so of anyone as suggestions or is pleased with something they use please let me know!

the idea behind kilomat and similar products is vibration reduction and lowering sound transfer via a dense mass. Not too different than placing a hand on a drum then striking it. You’ll get most of your results placing a large piece in the center of a resonant panel. The rest may get you 5% more.

I see a lot of people going nuts with this stuff covering every square inch. Which will certainly help, but diminished returns are at play.

I have looked under the floor of my 01 limited and there is basically a square of kilomat type stuff, plus a wool like insulation, then carpet.

your thermal insulation will come from that wool.

This is coming from my personal experience making music for a living and having build several of my own studios as well as others over the years.

In short. You need mass to isolate, air to insulate.

Ok thanks. I have I think 4 sheets of a kinda Kilmat on the old floor. Is there car specific wool type insulation or do you have any recommendations? Is the old one salvageable even if it was soaking wet? Thanks for your help.

I am not nearly as auto savvy as I am with acoustics. Haha. But I’d definitely get all that rust out before you do anything. The old insulation under your carpet likely has mold and rust in it. Best to start clean.
