Forgot to disconnect my battery while welding exhaust.. did I mess up PCM?
I was welding my rear cat back onto a 01 jeep XJ and I totally forgot to disconnect the battery, pcm, o2 sensors etc. and was wondering if you guys think I damaged anything computer/sensor wise? I had the welder ground right next to where I was welding on the exhaust pipe which was again right around the rear cat so the current didn’t run through any sensors. I haven’t turned it on yet I want your guys input first. Thanks!

Just had a muffler put on my 01 at my buddy's shop, we didn't disconnect the battery either. Everything's fine. You should be good to go.

I have always heard that you need to disconnect the battery before welding. But I have not always remembered to do so lol
I've never had an issue either way.

Electricity takes the path of least resistance, or shortest path basically. So I'm guessing you had the ground clamp somewhere near the welding area. So the easiest path from the clamp to the electrode would be just that. I highly doubt the current was sent up to the PCM or anywhere else other than that shortest path between the clamp and the tip of your welding gun.

I've never disconnected battery to weld on vehicle.
im not even sure disconnected battery would even change anything as everything is still grounded at multiple points

Suspect it be more likely if something is "wrong"..like a poor earth clamp with the MIG...but who hasnt had that ?...have felt whatever MIG voltage is passing thru me when welding on damp ground sometimes
Its a damm nuisance if you have radios and ECUs that need to re learn etc
Internet research may yield some info on what the recommendations are for high tech vehicles...be surprised if it says "weld away" lol
