Fram Oil Filter
Hey Guys, so I just changed the oil in my jeep and not knowing or reading anything about oil filters I just got a Fram Oil Filter. Now I'm reading bad reviews on them and I'm discouraged to keep it on. So is it worth getting a different one and changing it out. If so whats the best oil filter to use on my 99 cherokee. And if I do swap it, can i just unscrew it and screw the new one on without having all the oil spill out or will it all come out?

I ran Fram for awhile. The big reason is the cardboard element that's glued together.
It's really not that big of a deal unless you are running a high RPM drag racing engine lol.

I've never had an issue with a fram filter up until last year. Started the Jeep up after an oil/filter change and the oil pressure gauge was pegged! Changed the sending unit thinking that maybe by coincidence it happend to fail.. no change..
Swapped a WIX filter onto it and fired it up, oil pressure went back to normal. I understand it was probably a 1 in a million type deal, but i've been using WIX ever since just beause..

For 5 or 6 bucks, that Fram would be gone off any of my vehicles. Wix, Napa Gold or a Mopar or Purolator filter from WalMart would be a better option.

You'd better spend your time reading the websites than buying a new filter...but...you'll never want to buy FRAM again after reading these...
I'd keep the FRAM for 3000 more miles...WalMart has Puralator now...which is still pretty cheap, and a better reputation. For just a little more money, I usually go with the WIX from CarQuest

If i remeber correctly years ago a guy posted a test on srt4 forum about filters and the mopar had one of the best filtrations and reliabilty,but honestly i put on whatever. When you get oil changed anywhere (chains) they put on crazy cheap filters and you rarely hear any negatives just change regularly and youll be fine

the company that makes our race engines puts fram filters on them and if he has faith in them then i cant say anything negative about them... granite we dont keep same filter very long but we run the fram from the shop... couple of engines he built for us

What you guys seem to be missing, besides the number of documented failures of these Fram filters , is that on our Jeeps the filter is mounted upside down. Fram has a real chintzy anti-drainback valve which allows the filter to empty itself of oil when the engine is shut off. Then upon start-up you have a "dry start" where momentarily you have no oil, only air, being fed to your engine.
This critical ADBV coupled with media that comes apart, the glue on the media failing, the number of posts seen on the forums where a simple change from Fram to a high quality filter eliminated oil pressure problems and engine ticks, and generally substandard filtration is enough to keep me far away from these filters.
The poor construction, especially the ADBV quality which is a known issue, that has never been improved/fixed/addressed by the Fram company is not impressive.
