My conduit was sticking out pretty far. Pushed it all the way in and the pulled the cable till it clicked. Easy fix, but haven't done a test drive yet. Will report.

Well I pushed it back in and then pulled the down the throttle in the engine compartment until it clicked (it only clicked once). The next time I drove it seemed to shift a bit fiercer, but I couldn't get the pedal to the floor like normal. Basically restricting me to 60 mph. I stomped it and it returned to normal. I figured it just pulled the conduit back out and after checking that's exactly what happened. Back to the beginning. Didn't help..

Will try again, but I don't think it will work. Video seemed to show his ratcheting a bit more than mine.

Did it my '00 not to long ago too. I pushed in the cable release, held it in, and went WOT, then let go of the cable release. I can tell from the weathering that it is sticking out about a 1/4" more. Seems to shift smoother and I want to say I get into OD quicker.

Thanks to the OP if he is still out here. A little googling brought me to this quick fix, and its so nice to not have to stomp on the brakes hard when shifting into reverse or drive.

Here's a nice quick video explaining the process:

I know this thread is pretty dead now, but thank you so much!! I was wondering what could cause my 1990 XJ with 3 inch lift and 31s to be so darn gutless. I thought it was having engine problems or clogged cat, did this 10 second fix and it's a brand new Jeep. Got all my power back! Throttle response and idle is way better and it shifts amazing. CherokeeForum is the best.

19 years and NOBODY noticed this is the same cable used on GM products in the 60's! Now THAT amazes me! And it took a "Bleepin Jeep" video to show the right way to adjust it.

The funny part is the cable on the 42re for ZJs is different.

The cable is not a kick down cable but it does help with shifting. If the cable doesn’t do the trick try adjusting your tps. The tps also deals with the transmission/shifting

Yup, a lot of old school guys keep thinking that's a "kickdown" cable. The trans computer controls when to shift. The cable controls the hydraulic pressure inside the trans and how firmly it shifts. Too loose will cause sluggish or even no shifting, or very harsh shifting if to tight. You're spot on that a bad TPS is a very common cause of shifting issues, and pretty easy to test with a meter. Internally, the';re build very much like the mechanic volume **** on electronics - they can get scratchy, wear out in spots, and really don't take kindly to pressure washers. Note, the TPS is only slotted and adjustable on the older Renix Jeeps.

Default Always something to learn. Thank you

I’ve learned what I know from this forum and naxja, I just continue to listen to the gurus and my 1990 4.0 renix continues to purr. Dealing with slippage myself. Replaced and adjusted tps. Flushed fluid multiple times from return line. Checked fuse under the dash. Adjusted cable and it still slips going down hill at temp.
