Default The freeze plug on my 96 Cherokee will not stay in, no matter what I do.

Hey, so I have a unique situation. I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee XJ with the 4 L. And the rear freeze plug that’s hard to get to. It just keeps popping out for no reason I tried Loctite RTV gasket maker, and specially made locking compound and it never seems to stay in. It always comes out at random times. I would like it if only people who have had this problem previously either in a jeep or another vehicle comment.

Shelack sealant?

This is exactly what ive used multiple times. Good prep with a scotchbrite pad and letting it setup overnight.

Outside of proper prep and setup, what factors do you think could possibly be hindering your success? Rusty block? Importer prep? Improper setup? Poor quality freeze plugs?

If your situation is unique, then by definition, no one will be able to comment.

Are you trying to put the original back in? If it's new, what's the brand/part#?

Its hard to argue with that logic!

In any case, I pay extreme attention to detail on preparing the core plug lips, as they can become corroded, if after scraping and sanding, there are any pits, they should be sealed with JB weld or similar and sanded smooth. I use Pematex hard setting on the core plugs

If for any reason, you have done all that, two options remain, Dorman expandable plugs, which others swear by, but I have never used, or you can drill and tap a "stakedown" strap, this is done on some racing engines

IIWM I'd also be checking system pressure. Cracked head, faulty radiator cap, clogged cooling, blown head gasket, cracked block @core plug (they're not really "freeze" plugs)....'
