Default Freeze Plugs. Again

I have read hundreds of threads on freeze plugs but none that answer my question.

I have the transmission out to do the lower plug and I want to do the one on the head at the same time... Most threads say the only way to get to the top one is remove the head, a few say you can get to it with the tranny removed.

Currently with the engine tilted all the way dawn I still can't get to the top one. Anybody had any luck doing it this way before?

Even with the engine tilted as far back as you can go, it will probably still be a tight fit trying to get a new freeze plug installed with the minimal firewall clearance. Even if you get the old one out getting the new one seated straight would be a hard job. I've heard of a handful of crazy people that cut a hole in their firewall and get to it from the inside, then close the hole back up.

If you have a hoist it would be easier, you can hook it up to your engine, take off the mounts and try sliding the engine forward as much as you can. That might open up enough room to slip some tools back there.
