FRESH oil change. Already black?
So, I changed the oil in the XJ, it was run for less than 30 minutes, started twice more for less than five minutes, and the oil is already dark, not that nice amber color it should still be. Furthermore, I used 20w50 the first time, and have 10w30 for when I fill it back up again now that I know that that is what it should be.
Still, should the oil be so dark already??

maybe your engine is just so dirty you have to change it, drive 30 miles then change again to fully clean i've done that.lol i would put supertech in it and run for a few miles then change while hot with good oil.

It depends on how dirty the old oil was and how much of it was left in the engine after you drained it. I park mine the night before where I am going to do the change and drain it cold the next day. This way, as much of the oil as practicle has made it down to the pan. I also always change the filter with the oil.
Even after all this, the oil does darken after running. All the oil in the pump, passages, and puddles mixes in with the new and darkens it.

I get that part, but the oil (20w50) is dripping off the dip stick, it's really thin/drippy for some reason. There doesn't seem to be water in it, and it hasn't gained any volume, it came out at just about 6 quarts when I drained it so I don't think my block is cracked or anything. Smells a little bit like fuel, but not overly strong. It has me really confused.

What is the "history" of routine oil changes on this engine??
Color is not the best indicator of the condition of the oil, although it shouldn't turn black quickly.

The inline six is'int the cleanest running engine.
it dose not matter how long you let it drain because your still going to have some old oil left in the bearings, oil pump, and hydraulic lifters.
So adding new oil will just get mixed in with the old stuff and thats why it's black again.
You could try a motor flush and see how it comes out..
I get the same thing when I change mine and it's not a big deal to me because I know I have 5 1/2 new quarts in it.
