Default Front brake pad orientation?

On one end of the pad there is a notch and the other just a stop.
Does the notch of both pads go down or does one go down and one go up?

I had a heck of a time getting the caliper off because the pads were staggered, I found a video online, the guy places both the notches down.

Thanks.

According to the Haynes manual, the notches go down. That one got me to...you'd think having them lock on the direction they get pushed would make more sense.

Yea, I was going to do that, seems like they are more secure that way, but wasnt sure I would be able to get them on like that.

Thanks.

yes. notches down.

it is also a good idea to grind that edge where the notches sit, making it smooth. then a little dab of grease so it all slides nicely.

Agreed^. I almost mentioned that. "a small bit of high temp grease" (bearing grease), very sparingly where the pad bracket touches. Some of my older have eaten grooves there. Booger there is the grease might catch dust and make wear worse For instance I hung something on a tranny coolant line with a plastic zip-tie. Dust, vibration with a little tranny fluid cut through the line!

A bad groove can be filled in with a weld and ground back smooth.

Both sides had grooves, Not too bad though. I applied some high temp. grease at the contact points.
Both calipers were frozen. I had to go purchase a larger C clamp to push the pistons back in. Fortunately they moved. Took it for a test drive and everything seems good.
This was the easiest brake pad install Ive done on any vehicle ive owned.

Thanks guys for the tips.

I kept my knuckles clear of grease. Just filed them down and they seem to work fine. No grease originally so if I get another 15 years out of that repair I'd be happy.
