Hey i have a stock 1999 cherokee and im putting on a lift and tires. im thinking about a 3inch or 4.5inch lift and 31inch or 33inch offroad tires on. will this effect my mpg and what would be the best setup for me? im mostly going to be driving around town but i want to be able to go offroading on the beach and snow.

Your MPG will be taking a nosedive.

2in BB with 30's. Give you a little more clearance and bigger tires without the need for new shocks, extended break lines, SYE's etc, etc.

If you want to do some decent off-roading I would recommend a 3" with 31's. Gas mileage will go down but not so much that you couldn't drive it daily.

An XJ will wheel very nicely right out of the box without a lift. I wouldn't blow the money on a lift if I'm not taking it off road very often. Adding a lift will add problems too, the cheaper the lift kit the more problems you'll have. You will be chasing your tail trying to cure death wobble and other vibrations. But it is your rig, so do what you want. I have nothing against lifts, as long as they are quality and installed correctly. I baught a 95 ZJ a few months ago with a cheap teraflex 2" spacer lift on it. The Jeep felt goofy going down the road and it was kind of scarey and out of control. When it was installed, the installer did not loosen up the control arms and ended up puting the bushings into a bind, which caused them to wear out. The track bar and drag link geometry were all out of wack and helped cause death wobble at 50mph after hitting a bump. Noise! Lots of noise because of the spacers. I took the lift out and replace everything that was worn, as good as new now.
