I've hit the light a couple times waiting for gas prices to hit the low in the weekly cycle (Monday). Seems to me that when the light JUST comes on I can jam 65L in there before the pump shuts off, Chrysler build sheet says 75L tank.
17 gallons for only 35 miles??? Damn, dude! Lol :P

While driving through BFE Nevada in the middle of night there is a good 200 mile stretch with no gas stations open, not knowing this I kept on going, made it about halfway to next gas station and my light came on, thought for sure I was going to run out of gas and be stranded. Made the 100 miles to the next gas station with less than a gallon to spare.
Usually when I fill up right after my light comes on it takes 15.x gallons to fill it.

It also depends on when your light come on I had two XJ's that the light came on at 1/4 tank and two at 1/8 tank. And that would make a big difference how many mile you get once you light come on.

The manual on my 01 XJ says the light comes on when theres 2.5 gallons left in the tank. Mine came on the other day @ 1/8 of a tank, so its pretty accurate since its a 20 gal. tank.

Industry std is you should have at least 50 miles of driving left. Heard that from a friend who's a retired VP from ford so I'm guessing he knew what he was talking about.

Don't press your luck. The fuel pump is cooled by fuel. Running out of gas is very hard on your fuel pump and can reduce it's life, not to mention the gunk that is picked up and circulated when it sucks from the bottom of the tank.
I go no lower than 1/8th of a tank before fueling up.

You have a about 5 gallons left when the light comes on well I do in my 88 . So it can be from anywhere from 30-60 miles just dependes on how you drive. But leaving it low like that heat the pump up making it work harder and quicker death. It just matters how much you like dropping your tank.
