Default Fuel Pump Dead

Seriously, 9 months and the fuel pump is dying. Put in a Carter (I know, should have been Bosch). Jeep was running great until yesterday-lost power on highway, drove fine around town. Ok, so just drive around town for awhile. Couldn't get over 35MPH without it backfiring etc. Just filled the tank too.

Frustrating!

Actually Carter isn't that bad of a pump. If I couldn't find the Bosch I would get the next best which is the Carter pump. The one that you want to stay away from is the Airtech brand. You may have just gotten a bad one. If I were you, before dropping the tank again I would verify the fuel pressure at the fuel rail. With a little luck you won't have to drop the tank since you just filled it.

Going to check the fuel pressure today but it feels just like it did when I got it. TPS and CPS are only a few months old and I can hear the pump noise stop when I hit the gas hard (which can't be right). I bought a carter because it was supposed to be better but can't believe it wouldn't go at least a year. Oh well, it's just one thing after another and now it's my daily driver as well.

Finally got around to replacing the Carter pump. Bought a Bosch. New fuel filter and fuel screen. With the Carter, when I turned the key, it would whine and would make a noise the entire time that was audible outside of the Jeep and inside. Just before it went, it was getting pretty loud. With the Bosch, I can barely hear the pump priming when you turn the key. Hope it stays that way. Some orange rusty looking fuel came out of the fuel filter when I took it off. I had run the tank almost to empty just before filling it right to the top when the pump went. Must have ingested some rust but the screen didn't look that bad.

I still had to deal with that blasted lock ring. It's a real pain with a new rubber ring but I got it after an hour or so. Let's hope this pump lasts a while.

Happy for now.

Dude I'm having the same problem right now! What year is your jeep?? I just put in a new fuel filter the old one was dirty. I also swapped my old injectors to some Dodge Neon 703s. No go still. I'll into getting a Bosch fuel pump next. Hope you get yours up and running. Cheers!

Also, did you have to empty your tank when replacing the fuel pump? Mine is about 3/4 full.

I had just filled the tank when it went so I siphoned the tank down pretty low (the low fuel light was on after). On my '87 you can do it without dropping the tank (the hole for the pump is on the top half of the side). When I had put the Carter in, I dropped the tank since I had a heck of a time getting the lock ring back on.

It's not hard to drop the tank (on mine anyway). You disconnect all the rubber lines to the pump. Disconnect the pump harness. Remove the skid plate covering the fuel filler neck. Un-do the hose clamps. The filler neck is also held by something near the fill hole door if I remember. Then you break the hanger bolts by trying to remove them (seems to happen for every one). I broke the hanger bolts and had the tank drop down on my chest but was ready for it at least.

Once the tank is down, it is a lot easier to work on and you can look inside the tank to see what it looks like inside. You're supposed to use a brass drift to knock the lock ring around to remove the pump. You don't want sparks since there will be gas fumes in the tank you're whacking. I used a piece of hardwood and a hammer. Pump pulls out and just be careful as it has the strainer on the end at a 90 degree angle. Pull the pump out and see what brand it is before getting your replacement.

If you break the bolts, no autoparts place seems to have them (just the hangers) so you can go to a dealer to get them or just by some hardware at the hardware store. I used long threaded hooks that worked fine.

Not a bad job for a Saturday afternoon.

This is what I found on my 88 with a year-old carter. The ground wire that came with the replacement must not have had a good grip on the tab. Melted the wire and connector. I made a new wire and crimped it on tight. Fine now.

Thanks for that. The Bosch has a nice quick-connect style harness with a strain relief. Hope it will last a few years. I'm thinking my pump ingested a lot of rust and/or water at the bottom of the tank. The new Bosch is barely audible in the tank (just a low hum at priming). I could hear the Carter as a fairly loud moan/whine always at start up and it just got louder and louder.

Hey, i might be doing a fuel pump change out too. Is that ground wire visible with the tank in place? Jeep is randomly stalling and failing to start so i thought there may be a connection issue with the pump. Would be easier to at least check it off the list before dropping the tank.

No-you have to pull the pump / sender unit assembly out of the tank to see that.

I'm pretty sure it's up till 90 the pump is on the front of the tank and can be changed, then 91 on it's on the top and you need to drop the tank.

87-90 you want well under 1/2 tank...and be supper careful not to make sparks driving that ring on and off. I think I used a piece of oak last time. (as a drift), like 67GMC did.

I had gathered it was a Renix era thing. Well up till 90 at least...If it looks like the above pic, you don't need to drop the tank, just to change the pump...
