Default Fuel Pump & the saga continues...88 XJ

How can something so simple, be so complicated.....3 fuel pumps, to mount on my original sending unit....& now just sending back to Rock Auto my second assembly....Carter,...... the first one was Delphi... Of the 3 pumps none matched the original Bosch...just horrible 'make fit' by any means pumps.....Thus chose an assembly....the first one being Delphi... returned as it did not seat properly in the tank as the rubber cone would not fit into the hole properly, inside the tank...Then chose a Carter.....this has an arm for the guage that is totally different than the OEM...& to make it go into the tank it would have to be forced & most likely bent for an innacurate fuel reading......No Thank you..........I totally exhausted all the options that I know of.....Has anyone had any luck with a 'plug & play' fuel pump assy for a 1988 XJ ???

I think it likely that if you bought two of each of those brands, they would be different from each other out of the boxes. It took me three to get the right one that both moved fuel and gave tank level. The last one, that is still in the tank, was out of a Delphi box. I have a year and 5400 miles on that one.

Do you NEED the assembly?
Could you get by with just the pump?

I would take the pump if I found the OE Bosch ...but as you can see from my pic of the 3 pumps alone, none are an exact fit....& according to the applications they suppose to fit an 88 XJ 4.0.....

I would prioritize quality over fit if it were me and find a way to replace just the pump. Bosch.

Agreed quality....but that means fit as well....I have searched OE Bosch & came up empty..even an internet search with the part number does not bring anything up....Mopar websites either don't go that far back to 1988 or simply don't show a pump.... I do have a used OE one from a donor, but that's just... 'kicking the can down the road' ....This project is old..just want to be over with it........

We need the specs of the original one in regard to pressure and gallons peer hour. The mounting part is easy.

And still the saga continues.....Finally got a Delphi to seat into the tank....Now the problem is the fuel gauge....Theres about 5-6 gallons of gas in the tank, & the needle is on empty with the light on....I removed the pump & compaired it to the OE assy. (see pics of multi meter) ...The new pump does not start reading until the float is about a 3rd of the way up where the OE starts reading 1/8 of the way up....The initial reaction is to bend the float arm, but in doing so, the reading will be off when the tank is full ??? The Delphi application is for a 20 gallon tank, not sure if its designed for that flim flam 13 gallon tank......I have to take a break from this endless fuel pump replacement and perhaps someone has something that I'm completeing overlooking......Thanks....

Delphi float even with strainer

OEM float below strainer

Delphi 1/3 of the way up with 001 munti meeter reading

Delphi 008 reading at full

OEM pump 1/8 of the way up with 001 multi meter reading

OEM pump at full with 009 multi meeter readin
