Fuel pump sending unit
Is it possible to get a sending unit without having to get a whole new fuel pump assembly? If so, where? The pump is fine, the sending unit to accurate guage reading is bad. When I do a search, "grand" cherokee pops up too much and some don't say,...I have a cherokee sport (1996) If I HAVE to buy the whole thing, from where? Places like autozone don't even list them as a part they carry or can get.

Might be able to get just the sending unit from a JY. You might just try bending the float rod on yours to see if you can get it to read better. I don't think you can buy just the sending unit new, I think they made them so you have to buy the whole pump assembly. Last time I replaced my pump, it came with a new sending unit as part of the assembly. My gauge hasn't read correctly since but it reads as less gas than I actually have so, it's like I have a reserve tank. Once I hit empty, I know that I still have about three gallons in the tank. I have been lazy and just haven't "adjusted" the float rod yet.

I quick call to NAPA and all they sell is the fuel pump, no sending unit with it. Everywhere I "look" though says it is a one-piece unit. I'm not sure I understand this since I seemingly can purchase just a fuel pump.

I would suggest that if you're going to drop the tank to replace a sending unit you should do the pump too while you're there. Most people recommend a Bosch or Carter. Amazon had the cheapest Bosch I could find anywhere.

Yeah,,,your right about that and that's what I guess I'll end up doing. So many people told me to go to a junkyard and there are certain things I'd rather not get "used".

Willys55....thanks. I was thinking perhaps it was a "late" model 1996. I have had to return a few ignition parts for a 97 and that was a search-for-right-part problem. What did the unit costs?

This is getting very strange. I have called, Autozone, Napa, Advanced Auto and the local Jeep dealer. No one carries the sending unit assembly. All carry just the fuel pump. I found it very strange the dealer says they can't get it.
I may end up dropping a fuel tank from a junker but I was trying to avoid that. Does anyone know where I can purchase the fuel tank sending unit either with or without the pump?

I've got a '96 also. I've never read of a solution to this problem anywhere other than "go to the JY". Luckily the original owner of mine had the unit replaced yrs back. Just keeping my fingers(and everthing else I can)crossed now.
