Dejay, our magic crystal ***** are off for the weekend so we have no way to diag your jeep's problems without you ACTUALLY doing some diagnostics yourself.

Does your "check gauges" light come on when they drop out? Start checking all your connections, battery cables, grounds, alternator connections, etc.

Tach drops to zero. CPS would be my guess.

or......

AUTO-SHUT

wiring/relay..........

like mine was..... but that was years ago..... I fixed that sucker!

but fuel pressure is first check for sure.....

key on,,, not running, ( just accessory) , listen hard for fuel pump activation

( turn off the frickin raido will ya!?!?!?) hee hee

should hear a slight muffled humming noise......no?????

ok,,, rag in hand,,,,take off cap on fuel rail as shown in pic previously posted..... place rag around that "bicycle tire" looking valve ( schraeder valve actually)........press your thumbnail against the little valve thingy, (key on in accessory mode), for like a second or two, kinda instantly,,,if pump is properly working.....it will hiss fast n loud..... .if it dribbles.......

1. fuel filter clogged
2. pump gone bad.
3. fuel filter relay shot.

if pressure good...CPS or auto shut is likely///////

cheers!

I will also add, although I'm not an expert these guys will tell you. But if you pour a little gas, in the throttle body and it cranks and runs for a few seconds that's means it's not getting fuel to the rail. Which would point to the fuel pump being most likely the cause.

Just had a baby so I wasn't able to do much over the past couple days. I check the fuel pressure and I'm only getting 10 psi. I got it towed to my house and just tried starting it up after not running it for 3 or 4 days and it seems to be running almost perfect it's been sitting here idling for about 15 minutes I drove up the street with no problem and now I'm sitting in it typing this message. I'm not real sure what to do seeing is the PSI so low I would assume it's either the pump or the filter I'm thinking I'm going to start off with the filter just because it's cheaper what do you guys think. I'm heading up to the auto parts store now

Better head back this way bud. The filter for the 2000 XJ is part of the fuel pump module, not externally mounted.

10 psi is way too low. It should be 49.2 +/- 5 psi.

If you are going to replace the fuel pump module, only use a Bosch or Carter pump module...nothing else or you'll be replacing it again. Too many crib deaths from other brands.

Get some gas tank J-Bolts while you're at the store., you'll probably need them when you snap them on two trying to get them off.

I'm installing everything now the bottom filter in the fuel pump how does it connect to the fuel pump. There's a v-shaped plastic piece that has to go into the bottom of the fuel pump I'm not sure if it goes in the circular portion or into the park that's kind of u shaped that the VA would slide into and twist. If that makes any sense at all to you guys

The new filter is in on the bottom and what you see in the second picture is what sticking up I just have to figure out how to get the pump on to that part of the filter to where it actually secure and I'm not sure how it came off I guess I should have paid more attention

So . The fuel pump has been replaced and I'm still getting the same issues. While driving th tach will drop to 0 and the jeep will die. If I have my foot off the gas pedal when this happens the car will die. If I have my foot on the gas pedal it will just kind of jerk and the tach will start reading the rpms again properly.

I'm confused. Where do I start next? I need to get this thing running properly.

I just find it crazy that it ran fine until I got stuck four wheeling and now from rocking It back and forth to get out of mud it's running like this.

Oh, also the part time light flickers, not sure if that means anything but it keeps coming on and off.

Anybody have any insight as to whats going on? I'm losing my mind trying to figure it out. I thought for sure it would just be the fuel pump and I'd be done with it. Is there a fuel filter on the 01 XJ? I found a box bolted to the frame with gas lines running into and out of it about halfway back the frame on the drivers side. Assuming this would be the fuel filter? I'm not even sure if these symptoms would have anything to do with the fuel filter at this point.

It really confuses me that the part time light flickers (which it didn't before the day I went 4 wheeling) and that the tach drops to zero. Sometimes all the way (when I have my foot off the gas) and sometimes it catches itself and only drops to 1000 and then jerks and turns back on. It's a manual so it's basically just bump starting itself.

Well, thanks again for the help. Looking forward to getting my baby back on the road.

No external fuel filter

That's the EVAP Charcoal Canister, not a fuel filter.

You may have a loose connection(s) for the instrument cluster. Somewhat of a common problem. There's a Chrysler TSB to replace the connector(s) but a lot of people have had some luck removing the instrument cluster and cleaning the pins and pin cavities using CRC QD Electronic cleaner then re-securing the instrument cluster. Others have had no such luck and ended up having the dealer install the TSB connectors or doing it themselves.

I'm not saying this is your problem for sure but it would make sense if one, or both, CCD Bus pins are loose and you temporarily lose the CCD Bus. The instrument cluster is one of the main players in the CCD Bus circuit. Without it the CCD Bus goes down.

Well, thanks again for the help. Looking forward to getting my baby back on the road.
.

Edit: the next time it acts up hit the top of the dash above the instrument cluster with your fist (easy like) and see if anything changes.
